Berean Study BibleEnglish Standard Version
One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them.1On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.
But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”2But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”
Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?3And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.”4how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?”
Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”5And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.6On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.
Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath.7And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.
But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand among us.” So he got up and stood there.8But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”9And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?”
And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored.10And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored.
But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.11But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God.12In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.
When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:13And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:
Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;14Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot;15and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.16and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon.17And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon,
They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.18who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.
The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.19And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.20And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.21“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.22“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.23Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.24“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.25“Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way.26“Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,27“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.29To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back.30Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.31And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.32“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.34And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.36Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.37“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?39He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?41Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.43“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,
For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.44for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.45The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say?46“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them:47Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.48he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”49But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
