Parallel Chapters Dead to Sin, Alive to God
(2 Corinthians 4:7-18) 1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? | 1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? | 1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? | 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? | 1What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? |
By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? | 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? | 2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? | 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? | 2Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? |
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? | 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? | 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? | 3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? | 3Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? |
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. | 4We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. | 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. | 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. | 4Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life. |
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. | 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. | 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, | 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: | 5For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection. |
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- | 6We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. | 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; | 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. | 6For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin's dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, |
because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. | 7For one who has died has been set free from sin. | 7for he who has died is freed from sin. | 7For he that is dead is freed from sin. | 7since a person who has died is freed from sin's claims. |
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. | 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. | 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, | 8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: | 8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, |
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. | 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. | 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. | 9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. | 9because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him. |
The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. | 10For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. | 10For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. | 10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. | 10For in light of the fact that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God. |
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. | 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. | 11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. | 11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 11So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. |
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. | 12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. | 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, | 12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. | 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. |
Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. | 13Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. | 13and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. | 13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. | 13And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. |
For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. | 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. | 14For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. | 14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. | 14For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace. |
The Wages of Sin
(1 Peter 3:14-22) 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! | 15What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! | 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! | 15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. | 15What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! |
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? | 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? | 16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? | 16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? | 16Don't you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey--either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? |
But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. | 17But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, | 17But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, | 17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. | 17But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, |
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. | 18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. | 18and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. | 18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. | 18and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. |
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. | 19I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. | 19I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification. | 19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. | 19I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification. |
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. | 20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from allegiance to righteousness. |
What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! | 21But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. | 21Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. | 21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. | 21So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. |
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. | 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. | 22But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. | 22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. | 22But now, since you have been liberated from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification--and the end is eternal life! |
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
