Abraham and Keturah
(1 Chronicles 1:32–33)

1 וַיֹּ֧סֶף (And again) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) וַיִּקַּ֥ח (and took) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife), וּשְׁמָ֥הּ (and her name was) קְטוּרָֽה׃ (Keturah).

2 וַתֵּ֣לֶד (And she bore) ל֗וֹ (to) אֶת־ (him) זִמְרָן֙ (Zimran), וְאֶת־ (and) יָקְשָׁ֔ן (Jokshan), וְאֶת־ (and) מְדָ֖ן (Medan), וְאֶת־ (and) מִדְיָ֑ן (Midian), וְאֶת־ (and) יִשְׁבָּ֖ק (Ishbak), וְאֶת־ (and) שֽׁוּחַ׃ (Shuah).

3 וְיָקְשָׁ֣ן (And Jokshan) יָלַ֔ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) שְׁבָ֖א (Sheba) וְאֶת־ (and) דְּדָ֑ן (Dedan). וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) דְדָ֔ן (of Dedan) הָי֛וּ (were) אַשּׁוּרִ֥ם (Asshurites), וּלְטוּשִׁ֖ים (and Letushites), וּלְאֻמִּֽים׃ (and Leummites).

4 וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) מִדְיָ֗ן (of Midian were) עֵיפָ֤ה (Ephah), וָעֵ֙פֶר֙ (and Epher), וַחֲנֹ֔ךְ (and Hanoch), וַאֲבִידָ֖ע (and Abidah), וְאֶלְדָּעָ֑ה (and Eldaah). כָּל־ (All) אֵ֖לֶּה (these) בְּנֵ֥י (were sons) קְטוּרָֽה׃ (of Keturah).

5 וַיִּתֵּ֧ן (And gave) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֖וֹ (he had) לְיִצְחָֽק׃ (to Isaac).

6 וְלִבְנֵ֤י (And to the sons) הַפִּֽילַגְשִׁים֙ (of the concubines) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (unto) לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), נָתַ֥ן (gave) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) מַתָּנֹ֑ת (gifts), וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם (and he sent them away) מֵעַ֨ל (from) יִצְחָ֤ק (Isaac) בְּנוֹ֙ (his son) בְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ (while he was still) חַ֔י (living), קֵ֖דְמָה (eastward) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) קֶֽדֶם׃ (of the east).

The Death of Abraham

7 וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these are) יְמֵ֛י (the days) שְׁנֵֽי־ (of the years) חַיֵּ֥י (of the life) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) חָ֑י (he lived) מְאַ֥ת (a hundred) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים (and seventy) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וְחָמֵ֥שׁ (and five) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years).

8 וַיִּגְוַ֨ע (And expired) וַיָּ֧מָת (and he died) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham), בְּשֵׂיבָ֥ה (at an old age) טוֹבָ֖ה (good), זָקֵ֣ן (old) וְשָׂבֵ֑עַ (and satisfied), וַיֵּאָ֖סֶף (and he was gathered) אֶל־ (to) עַמָּֽיו׃ (his people).

9 וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ (And buried) אֹת֜וֹ (him) יִצְחָ֤ק (Isaac) וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ (and Ishmael) בָּנָ֔יו (his sons) אֶל־ (in) מְעָרַ֖ת (the cave) הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֑ה (of Machpelah), אֶל־ (in) שְׂדֵ֞ה (the field) עֶפְרֹ֤ן (of Ephron) בֶּן־ (son) צֹ֙חַר֙ (of Zohar) הַֽחִתִּ֔י (the Hittite), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) עַל־ (-) פְּנֵ֥י (before) מַמְרֵֽא׃ (Mamre),

10 הַשָּׂדֶ֛ה (the field) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) קָנָ֥ה (had purchased) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) חֵ֑ת (of Heth). שָׁ֛מָּה (There) קֻבַּ֥ר (was buried) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) וְשָׂרָ֥ה (and Sarah) אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (his wife).

11 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵי֙ (after) מ֣וֹת (the death) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (of Abraham), וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ (that blessed) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָ֣ק (Isaac) בְּנ֑וֹ (his son). וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב (And dwelt) יִצְחָ֔ק (Isaac) עִם־ (near) בְּאֵ֥ר (Beer-) לַחַ֖י (lahai-) רֹאִֽי׃ס (roi).

The Descendants of Ishmael
(1 Chronicles 1:28–31)

12 וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these are) תֹּלְדֹ֥ת (the generations) יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל (of Ishmael) בֶּן־ (son) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (of Abraham), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) יָלְדָ֜ה (bore) הָגָ֧ר (Hagar) הַמִּצְרִ֛ית (the Egyptianess), שִׁפְחַ֥ת (maidservant) שָׂרָ֖ה (of Sarah), לְאַבְרָהָֽם׃ (to Abraham).

13 וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these are) שְׁמוֹת֙ (the names) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל (of Ishmael), בִּשְׁמֹתָ֖ם (by their names), לְתוֹלְדֹתָ֑ם (according to their generations): בְּכֹ֤ר (The firstborn) יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ (of Ishmael)— נְבָיֹ֔ת (Nebajoth), וְקֵדָ֥ר (and Kedar), וְאַדְבְּאֵ֖ל (and Adbeel), וּמִבְשָֽׂם׃ (and Mibsam),

14 וּמִשְׁמָ֥ע (and Mishma), וְדוּמָ֖ה (and Dumah), וּמַשָּֽׂא׃ (and Massa),

15 חֲדַ֣ד (Hadad), וְתֵימָ֔א (and Tema), יְט֥וּר (Jetur), נָפִ֖ישׁ (Naphish), וָקֵֽדְמָה׃ (and Kedemah).

16 אֵ֣לֶּה (These) הֵ֞ם (were) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ (of Ishmael), וְאֵ֣לֶּה (and these were) שְׁמֹתָ֔ם (their names), בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֖ם (by their towns) וּבְטִֽירֹתָ֑ם (and their settlements), שְׁנֵים־ (two) עָשָׂ֥ר (and ten) נְשִׂיאִ֖ם (princes), לְאֻמֹּתָֽם׃ (according to their tribes).

17 וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these were) שְׁנֵי֙ (the years) חַיֵּ֣י (of the life) יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל (of Ishmael), מְאַ֥ת (a hundred) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (and thirty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וְשֶׁ֣בַע (and seven) שָׁנִ֑ים (years). וַיִּגְוַ֣ע (And he expired) וַיָּ֔מָת (and died), וַיֵּאָ֖סֶף (and was gathered) אֶל־ (to) עַמָּֽיו׃ (his people).

18 וַיִּשְׁכְּנ֨וּ (And they dwelt) מֵֽחֲוִילָ֜ה (from Havilah) עַד־ (as far as) שׁ֗וּר (Shur), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which is) עַל־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י (before) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) בֹּאֲכָ֖ה (as you go) אַשּׁ֑וּרָה (toward Asshur). עַל־ (Against) פְּנֵ֥י (the faces) כָל־ (of all) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) נָפָֽל׃פ (has he fallen).

Jacob and Esau
(Malachi 1:1–5; Romans 9:6–29)

19 וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these are) תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת (the generations) יִצְחָ֖ק (of Isaac), בֶּן־ (son) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (of Abraham): אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac).

20 וַיְהִ֤י (And was) יִצְחָק֙ (Isaac) בֶּן־ (a son) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (of forty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) בְּקַחְתּ֣וֹ (when he took) אֶת־ (-) רִבְקָ֗ה (Rebekah), בַּת־ (the daughter) בְּתוּאֵל֙ (of Bethuel) הָֽאֲרַמִּ֔י (the Aramaean) מִפַּדַּ֖ן (from Paddan-) אֲרָ֑ם (aram), אֲח֛וֹת (the sister) לָבָ֥ן (of Laban) הָאֲרַמִּ֖י (the Aramaean), ל֥וֹ (to him) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife).

21 וַיֶּעְתַּ֨ר (And entreated) יִצְחָ֤ק (Isaac) לַֽיהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְנֹ֣כַח (for) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife), כִּ֥י (because) עֲקָרָ֖ה (was barren) הִ֑וא (she). וַיֵּעָ֤תֶר (Was entreated) לוֹ֙ (for him) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וַתַּ֖הַר (and conceived) רִבְקָ֥ה (Rebekah) אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (his wife).

22 וַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּ (And struggled together) הַבָּנִים֙ (the children) בְּקִרְבָּ֔הּ (within her), וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and she said), אִם־ (If) כֵּ֔ן (so), לָ֥מָּה (why) זֶּ֖ה (this) אָנֹ֑כִי (I)? וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ (And she went) לִדְרֹ֥שׁ (to inquire of) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

23 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) לָ֗הּ (to her), שְׁנֵ֤י (Two) גֹיִים (nations are) בְּבִטְנֵ֔ךְ (in your womb), וּשְׁנֵ֣י (and two) לְאֻמִּ֔ים (peoples) מִמֵּעַ֖יִךְ (from your bowels) יִפָּרֵ֑דוּ (shall be separated); וּלְאֹם֙ (and one people) מִלְאֹ֣ם (than the other) יֶֽאֱמָ֔ץ (shall be stronger), וְרַ֖ב (and the older) יַעֲבֹ֥ד (will serve) צָעִֽיר׃ (the younger).

24 וַיִּמְלְא֥וּ (And were fulfilled) יָמֶ֖יהָ (her days) לָלֶ֑דֶת (to give birth), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and indeed there were) תוֹמִ֖ם (twins) בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃ (in her womb).

25 וַיֵּצֵ֤א (And came out) הָרִאשׁוֹן֙ (the first) אַדְמוֹנִ֔י (ruddy) כֻּלּ֖וֹ (all over) כְּאַדֶּ֣רֶת (like a cloak) שֵׂעָ֑ר (hairy); וַיִּקְרְא֥וּ (and they called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) עֵשָֽׂו׃ (Esau).

26 וְאַֽחֲרֵי־ (And) כֵ֞ן (afterward) יָצָ֣א (came out) אָחִ֗יו (his brother), וְיָד֤וֹ (and his hand) אֹחֶ֙זֶת֙ (was grasping) בַּעֲקֵ֣ב (at the heel) עֵשָׂ֔ו (of Esau); וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and he called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob). וְיִצְחָ֛ק (And Isaac) בֶּן־ (was a son) שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (of sixty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) בְּלֶ֥דֶת (when she bore) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

27 וַֽיִּגְדְּלוּ֙ (And grew) הַנְּעָרִ֔ים (the boys). וַיְהִ֣י (And was) עֵשָׂ֗ו (Esau) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) יֹדֵ֥עַ (skillful), צַ֖יִד (a hunter), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) שָׂדֶ֑ה (of the field); וְיַעֲקֹב֙ (and Jacob was) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) תָּ֔ם (blameless), יֹשֵׁ֖ב (dwelling in) אֹהָלִֽים׃ (tents).

28 וַיֶּאֱהַ֥ב (And loved) יִצְחָ֛ק (Isaac) אֶת־ (-) עֵשָׂ֖ו (Esau) כִּי־ (because of) צַ֣יִד (the game) בְּפִ֑יו (in his mouth); וְרִבְקָ֖ה (and Rebekah) אֹהֶ֥בֶת (loved) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob).

Esau Sells His Birthright

29 וַיָּ֥זֶד (And boiled) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) נָזִ֑יד (a stew), וַיָּבֹ֥א (and came in) עֵשָׂ֛ו (Esau) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (the field), וְה֥וּא (and he) עָיֵֽף׃ (was weary).

30 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) עֵשָׂ֜ו (Esau) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob), הַלְעִיטֵ֤נִי (Let me gulp down), נָא֙ (please), מִן־ (with) הָאָדֹ֤ם (the red) הָאָדֹם֙ (the red) הַזֶּ֔ה (this one), כִּ֥י (for) עָיֵ֖ף (weary) אָנֹ֑כִי (I am)! עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) קָרָֽא־ (was called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) אֱדֽוֹם׃ (Edom).

31 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob), מִכְרָ֥ה (Sell) כַיּ֛וֹם (today) אֶת־ (-) בְּכֹֽרָתְךָ֖ (your birthright) לִֽי׃ (to me).

32 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) עֵשָׂ֔ו (Esau), הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֥י (I am) הוֹלֵ֖ךְ (going) לָמ֑וּת (to die); וְלָמָּה־ (and for what is) זֶּ֥ה (this) לִ֖י (to me) בְּכֹרָֽה׃ (birthright)?

33 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said), יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob) הִשָּׁ֤בְעָה (Swear) לִּי֙ (to me) כַּיּ֔וֹם (today). וַיִּשָּׁבַ֖ע (And he swore) ל֑וֹ (to him) וַיִּמְכֹּ֥ר (and sold) אֶת־ (-) בְּכֹרָת֖וֹ (his birthright) לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (to Jacob).

34 וְיַעֲקֹ֞ב (And Jacob) נָתַ֣ן (gave) לְעֵשָׂ֗ו (to Esau) לֶ֚חֶם (bread) וּנְזִ֣יד (and stew) עֲדָשִׁ֔ים (of lentils); וַיֹּ֣אכַל (and he ate) וַיֵּ֔שְׁתְּ (and drank), וַיָּ֖קָם (and arose), וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ (and went). וַיִּ֥בֶז (And despised) עֵשָׂ֖ו (Esau) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּכֹרָֽה׃ס (the birthright).
