Luke 4:3-44 ▼

3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak to this stone, that it might become bread.”

4 And Jesus answered to him, “It has been written: ‘Not on bread alone shall the man live.’”

5 And having led Him up, he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give to You all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I wish.

7 You, therefore, if You worship before me, all will be Yours.”

8 And answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”

9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and he said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.

10 For it has been written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully,

11 and on hands they will lift You up, lest ever You may strike Your foot against a stone.’”

12 And answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”

13 And the devil, having ended every temptation, departed from Him until an opportune time.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report went out through all the surrounding region concerning Him.

15 And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He entered into the synagogue on the day of the Sabbaths, and He rose up to read.

17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because of which He anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth the oppressed in deliverance,

19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 And having rolled up the scroll, having given it back to the attendant, He sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were looking intently on Him.

21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your? ears.”

22 And all were testifying to Him and were marveling at the words of grace that are proceeding out of His mouth. And they were saying, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”

23 And He said to them, “Surely you? will say to Me this parable: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatsoever we heard was done in Capernaum, do also here in Your hometown.’”

24 And He said, “Truly I say to you? that no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

25 And in truth I say to you?, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came upon all the land.

26 And Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath of the Sidonians, to a woman, a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.”

28 And all in the synagogue were filled with anger, hearing these things.

29 And having risen up, they cast Him out of the city and led Him unto the brow of the hill upon which their city had been built, so as to throw Him over.

30 But He, having passed through their midst, went away.

31 And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbaths.

32 And they were astonished at His teaching, because His word was with authority.

33 And in the synagogue was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out in a loud voice,

34 “Ha! What to us and to You, Jesus the Nazarene? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silenced, and come out from him!” And having thrown him into the midst, the demon came out from him, in nothing having hurt him.

36 And amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together with one another, saying, “What word is this, that with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?”

37 And the report concerning Him was going out into every place of the surrounding region.

38 And having arisen out of the synagogue, He entered into the house of Simon. And Simon’s mother-in-law was oppressed with a great fever, and they asked Him concerning her.

39 And having stood over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately, having arisen, she was serving them.

40 And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had any ailing with various diseases, brought them to Him. And He, having laid the hands on each one of them, was healing them.

41 Now demons also were going out from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” And rebuking them, He was not allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

42 And day having come, having gone out, He went into a solitary place. And the crowds were seeking Him, and they came up to Him and were detaining Him not to go from them.

43 But He said to them, “It is necessary for Me to preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this I was sent.”

44 And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
