God of vengeance—YHWH! God of vengeance, shine forth. O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth.
Be lifted up, judging the earth, || Send back a repayment on the proud. Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve.
Until when do the wicked, O YHWH—Until when do the wicked exult? O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant?
They utter—they speak arrogance, || All working iniquity boast [about] themselves. They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.
Your people, O YHWH, they bruise, || And they afflict Your inheritance. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance.
They slay widow and sojourner, || And they murder fatherless ones. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.
And they say, “YAH does not see, || And the God of Jacob does not consider.” and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
Consider, you brutish among the people, || And you foolish, when do you act wisely? Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
He who plants the ear, does He not hear? He who forms the eye, does He not see? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?
He who is instructing nations, does He not reprove? He who is teaching man knowledge [is] YHWH. He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
He knows the thoughts of man, that they [are] vanity. the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile.
O the blessedness of the man || Whom You instruct, O YAH, || And teach him out of Your law, Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law;
To give rest to him from days of evil, || While a pit is dug for the wicked. to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.
For YHWH does not leave His people, || And does not forsake His inheritance. For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.
For judgment turns back to righteousness, || And after it all the upright of heart. for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.
Who rises up for me with evildoers? Who stations himself for me with workers of iniquity? Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
Unless YHWH [were] a help to me, || My soul had almost inhabited silence. If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
If I have said, “My foot has slipped,” || Your kindness, O YHWH, supports me. When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
In the abundance of my thoughts within me, || Your comforts delight my soul. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
Is a throne of mischief joined [with] You? A framer of perverseness by statute? Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
They decree against the soul of the righteous, || And declare innocent blood wicked. They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
And YHWH is for a high place to me, || And my God [is] for a rock—my refuge, But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
And He turns back their iniquity on them, || And in their wickedness cuts them off; Our God YHWH cuts them off! He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.
