1 The Lord is the God to whom revenge belongeth: the God of revenge hath acted freely. O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Lift up thyself, thou that judgest the earth: render a reward to the proud. Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve.
3 How long shall sinners, O Lord: how long shall sinners glory? O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant?
4 Shall they utter, and speak iniquity: shall all speak who work injustice? They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.
5 Thy people, O Lord, they have brought low: and they have afflicted thy inheritance. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance.
6 They have slain the widow and the stranger: and they have murdered the fatherless. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.
7 And they have said: The Lord shall not see: neither shall the God of Jacob understand. and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
8 Understand, ye senseless among the people: and, you fools, be wise at last. Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? or he that formed the eye, doth he not consider? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?
10 He that chastiseth nations, shall he not rebuke: he that teacheth man knowledge? He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of men, that they are vain. the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile.
12 Blessed is the man whom thou shalt instruct, O Lord: and shalt teach him out of thy law. Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law;
13 That thou mayst give him rest from the evil days: till a pit be dug for the wicked. to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not cast off his people: neither will he forsake his own inheritance. For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Until justice be turned into judgment: and they that are near it are all the upright in heart. for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who shall rise up for me against the evildoers? or who shall stand with me against the workers of iniquity? Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
17 Unless the Lord had been my helper, my soul had almost dwelt in hell. If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18 If I said: My foot is moved: thy mercy, O Lord, assisted me. When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, thy comforts have given joy to my soul. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
20 Doth the seat of iniquity stick to thee, who framest labour in commandment? Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 They will hunt after the soul of the just, and will condemn innocent blood. They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord is my refuge: and my God the help of my hope. But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 And he will render them their iniquity: and in their malice he will destroy them: the Lord our God will destroy them. He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.
