In thee O God I haue put my trust, let me neuer be put to confusion: | In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! | In you, LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. |
(71:1) ridde me and deliuer me in thy ryghteousnesse, incline thine eare vnto me, and saue me. | In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! | In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me; turn your ear to me and save me. |
(71:2) Be thou my strong holde whervnto I may alway resort: thou hast geuen a charge to saue me, for thou art my house of defence, and my castell. | Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. | Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. |
(71:3) Delyuer me O my Lorde out of the hande of the vngodly: out of the hande of the vnryghteous and cruell man. | Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. | Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel. |
(71:4) For thou O Lorde God art the thyng that I long for: thou art my hope euen from my youth. | For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. | For you have been my hope, Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth. |
(71:5) Through thee haue I ben mayntayned euer since I was borne: thou art he that toke me out of my mothers wombe, my praise shalbe alway of thee. | Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of you. | From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you. |
(71:6) I am become as it were a monster vnto many: but my sure trust is in thee. | I have been as a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. | I have become a sign to many; you are my strong refuge. |
(71:7) Oh let my mouth be fylled: with thy prayse and glorie all the day long. | My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day. | My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long. |
(71:8) Cast me not away in the tyme of age: forsake me not when my strength fayleth me. | Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent. | Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone. |
(71:9) For myne enemies speake against me: and they that lay awayte for my soule take their counsayle together. | For my enemies speak concerning me; those who watch for my life consult together | For my enemies speak against me; those who wait to kill me conspire together. |
(71:10) They say, the Lorde hath forsaken hym: do you persecute hym and take hym, for there is none to delyuer hym. | and say, “God has forsaken him; pursue and seize him, for there is none to deliver him.” | They say, “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for no one will rescue him.” |
(71:11) Go not farre from me O Lorde: haste thee O my Lorde to helpe me. | O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! | Do not be far from me, my God; come quickly, God, to help me. |
(71:12) Let them be confounded, let them be brought to naught that are agaynst my soule: let them be couered with shame and dishonour that seke to do me euyll. | May my accusers be put to shame and consumed; with scorn and disgrace may they be covered who seek my hurt. | May my accusers perish in shame; may those who want to harm me be covered with scorn and disgrace. |
(71:13) As for me I wyll patiently wayte alway: and I wyll prayse thee more and more. | But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. | As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. |
(71:14) My mouth shall dayly speake of thy ryghteousnesse and saluation: for I knowe no ende therof. | My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. | My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long— though I know not how to relate them all. |
(71:15) I wyll go foorth in the strength of the Lorde God: and I wyll only make mention of thy ryghteousnesse. | With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. | I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, Sovereign LORD; I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone. |
(71:16) Thou O God hast taught me from my youth: and hytherto I can well declare thy wonderous workes. | O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. | Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. |
(71:17) Wherfore whylest I am olde and am gray headed: O Lorde forsake me not, vntyll I haue shewed thy arme vnto this generation, and thy power to all them that are yet for to come. | So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. | Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. |
(71:18) And vntyll I haue exceedyngly exalted O Lorde thy ryghteousnesse: for great thynges are they that thou hast done, O Lorde who is lyke vnto thee? | Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you? | Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens, you who have done great things. Who is like you, God? |
(71:19) Which hast made me to feele many great troubles and aduersities: yet returnyng thou hast reuyued me, yea returnyng thou hast caused me to come out from the bottome of the earth. | You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. | Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. |
(71:20) Thou hast brought me to greater honour then I had before: & thou returnyng hast comforted me on euery syde. | You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. | You will increase my honor and comfort me once more. |
(71:21) Therfore I wyll confesse vnto thee thy trueth O Lorde, playing vpon an instrument of musicke: vnto thee I wyl syng psalmes vpon the harpe O thou most holy God of Israel. | I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. | I will praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, my God; I will sing praise to you with the lyre, Holy One of Israel. |
(71:22) My lyppes wyll be ioyfull when I syng vnto thee: and so wyll my soule which thou hast redeemed. | My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. | My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered. |
(71:23) My tongue also shal talke of thy righteousnesse all the day long: for they are confounded and brought vnto shame that seke to do me euyll. | And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt. | My tongue will tell of your righteous acts all day long, for those who wanted to harm me have been put to shame and confusion. |
