To the overseer for the sons of Korah: of instruction. O God, with our ears we heard; our fathers recounted to us the work thou didst in their days, in days of old. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
Thou didst with thy hand drive out the nations and thou wilt plant them; thou wilt pluck in pieces the people, and thou wilt send them forth. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
For by their sword they possessed not the land, and their arm saved them not: for thy right hand and thine arm, and the light of thy face, for thou didst delight in them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
Thou art he my King, O God: command the salvation of Jacob. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
In thee we will thrust our enemies: in thy name we will tread down those rising up against us. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword will not serve me. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
For thou savedst us from our enemies, and those hating us thou didst make ashamed. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
In God we praised all the day, and thy name we will celebrate forever. Silence. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
But thou didst reject, and thou wilt shame us, and not go forth with our armies. But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
Thou wilt turn us back from the enemy: and those hating us spoiled for themselves. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
Thou wilt give us as sheep for food, and thou didst scatter us among the nations. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
Thou wilt sell thy people without riches, and thou didst not increase by their price. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
Thou wilt set us a reproach to our neighbors, and a derision and scorn to them round about us. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
Thou wilt set us a parable among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
All the day my shame before me, and the confusion of my face covered me, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
From the voice of him reproaching and reviling, from the face of the enemy and avenger. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
All this came to us, and we did not forget thee, and we lied not in thy covenant. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.
Our heart drew not back, and thou wilt not incline our going from thy path; Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
For thou didst crush us in the place of jackals, and thou wilt cover over us with the shadow of death. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.
If we forgat the name of our God, and stretched out our hands to a strange god: If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Will not God search this out? for he knew the secrets of the heart. would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
For, for thee we were killed all the day; we were reckoned as sheep of the slaughter. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Awake, why wilt thou sleep, O Jehovah? awake, thou wilt not reject forever. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
Why wilt thou hide thy face? wilt thou forget our affliction and our oppression? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
For our soul was bowed down to the dust: our belly was glued to the earth. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
Arise a help for us, and redeem us for sake of thy mercy. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
