1 Unto the end, for the sons of Core, to give understanding. We have heard, O God, with our ears : our fathers have declared to us, The work, thou hast wrought in their days, and in the days of old. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
2 Thy hand destroyed the Gentiles, and thou plantedst them : thou didst afflict the people and cast them out. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
3 For they got not the possession of the land by their own sword : neither did their own arm save them. But thy right hand and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance : because thou wast pleased with them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
4 Thou art thyself my king and my God, who commandest the saving of Jacob. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
5 Through thee we will push down our enemies with the horn : and through thy name we will despise them that rise up against us. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
6 For I will not trust in my bow : neither shall my sword save me. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
7 But thou hast saved us from them that afflict us : and hast put them to shame that hate us. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God shall we glory all the day long : and in thy name we will give praise for ever. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
9 But now thou hast cast us off, and put us to shame : and thou, O God, wilt not go out with our armies. But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
10 Thou hast made us turn our back to our enemies : and they that hated us plundered for themselves. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 Thou hast given us up like sheep to be eaten : thou hast scattered us among the nations. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
12 Thou hast sold thy people for no price : and there was no reckoning in the exchange of them. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
13 Thou hast made us a reproach to our neighbours, a scoff and derision to them that are round about us. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 Thou hast made us a byword among the Gentiles : a shaking of the head among the people. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
15 All the day long my shame is before me : and the confusion of my face hath covered me, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
16 At the voice of him that reproacheth and detracteth me : at the face of the enemy and persecutor. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17 All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten thee : and we have not done wickedly in they covenant. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.
18 And our heart hath not turned back : neither hast thou turned aside our steps from thy way. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 For thou hast humbled us in the place of affliction : and the shadow of death hath covered us. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have spread forth our hands to a strange god : If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 Shall not God search out these things : for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Because for thy sake we are killed all the day long : we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 Shall not God search out these things : for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Because for thy sake we are killed all the day long : we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 Arise, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, and cast us not off to the end. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
24 Why turnest thou face away? and forgettest our want and our trouble? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
25 For our soul is humbled down to the dust : our belly cleaveth to the earth. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Arise, O Lord, help us and redeem us for thy name's sake. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
