1 {To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. An instruction.} O God, with our ears have we heard, our fathers have told us, the work thou wroughtest in their days, in the days of old: O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
2 Thou, by thy hand, didst dispossess the nations, but them thou didst plant; thou didst afflict the peoples, but them didst thou cause to spread out. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
3 For not by their own sword did they take possession of the land, neither did their own arm save them; but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst delight in them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
4 Thou thyself art my king, O God: command deliverance for Jacob. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
5 Through thee will we push down our adversaries; through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
6 For I will not put confidence in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
7 For thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God will we boast all the day, and we will praise thy name for ever. Selah. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to confusion, and dost not go forth with our armies; But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
10 Thou hast made us to turn back from the adversary, and they that hate us spoil for themselves; You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 Thou hast given us over like sheep [appointed] for meat, and hast scattered us among the nations; You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
12 Thou hast sold thy people for nought, and hast not increased [thy wealth] by their price; You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a mockery and a derision for them that are round about us; You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
15 All the day my confusion is before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
16 Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely against thy covenant: All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy path; Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 Though thou hast crushed us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, and stretched out our hands to a strange god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 Would not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 But for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, [and] forgettest our affliction and our oppression? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly cleaveth unto the earth. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up for our help, and redeem us for thy loving-kindness' sake. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
