<V 108:1>Unto the end. A Psalm of David. Be not silent, O God of my praise! For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent,
<V 108:2>O God, do not be silent toward my praise, for the mouth of the sinner and the mouth of the deceitful one have been opened against me. For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.
<V 108:3>They have spoken against me with deceitful tongues, and they have surrounded me with hateful words, and they fought against me over nothing. They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.
<V 108:4>Instead of choosing to act on my behalf, they detracted me. But I gave myself to prayer. In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.
<V 108:5>And they set evil against me, instead of good, and hatred, in return for my love. So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.
<V 108:6>Establish the sinner over him, and let the devil stand at his right hand. Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand.
<V 108:7>When he is judged, may he go forth in condemnation, and may his prayer be counted as sin. When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin! When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him.
<V 108:8>May his days be few, and let another take his episcopate. May his days be few; may another take his office! May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.
<V 108:9>May his sons be orphans, and his wife a widow. May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow! May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
<V 108:10>May his sons be carried by those who walk unsteadily, and may they go begging. And may they be cast out of their dwelling places. May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.
<V 108:11>May the money lenders scrutinize all his belongings, and let foreigners plunder his labors. May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil! May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
<V 108:12>May there be no one to assist him, nor anyone to be compassionate to his orphaned children. Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children! May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.
<V 108:13>May his posterity be in utter ruin. In one generation, may his name be wiped away. May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation! May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.
<V 108:14>May the iniquity of his fathers return in memory before the sight of the Lord, and do not let the sin of his mother be wiped away. May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out! May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
<V 108:15>May these be opposite the Lord always, but let their memory perish from the earth. Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth! May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.
<V 108:16>For certain things are not remembered about them, in order to be merciful. For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.
<V 108:17>And so the destitute man was pursued, with the beggar and the remorseful in heart, so as to be put to death. He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him! He loved to pronounce a curse— may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing— may it be far from him.
<V 108:18>And he loved a curse, and it came to him. And he was unwilling to have a blessing, and it went far from him. And he clothed himself with curses like a garment, and it entered his inner self like water, and it entered his bones like oil. He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones! He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil.
<V 108:19>May it be to him like a garment that covers him, and like a belt that always cinches him. May it be like a garment that he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day! May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.
<V 108:20>This is the work of those who detract me with the Lord and who speak evils against my soul. May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my life! May this be the LORD’s payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.
<V 108:21>But as for you, Lord, O Lord: act on my behalf for your name’s sake. For your mercy is sweet. But you, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me! But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.
<V 108:22>Free me, for I am destitute and poor, and my heart has been disquieted within me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is stricken within me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
<V 108:23>I have been taken away like a shadow when it declines, and I have been shaken off like locusts. I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.
<V 108:24>My knees have been weakened by fasting, and my flesh has been replaced by oil. My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt, with no fat. My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.
<V 108:25>And I have become a disgrace to them. They saw me, and they shook their heads. I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they wag their heads. I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.
<V 108:26>Help me, O Lord, my God. Save me according to your mercy. Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to your steadfast love! Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love.
<V 108:27>And let them know that this is your hand, and that you, O Lord, have done this. Let them know that this is your hand; you, O LORD, have done it! Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.
<V 108:28>They will curse, and you will bless. May those who rise up against me be confounded. But your servant will rejoice. Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad! While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice.
<V 108:29>May those who detract me be clothed with shame, and may they be covered with their confusion, as if with a double cloak. May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak! May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.
<V 108:30>I will confess exceedingly to the Lord with my mouth. And I will praise him in the midst of the multitude. With my mouth I will give great thanks to the LORD; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.
<V 108:31>For he stands at the right hand of the poor, in order to save my soul from persecutors. For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death. For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.
