1 Jesus climbed into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.
2 Some people brought to him a paralyzed man on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Be encouraged, my child! Your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”
3 But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, “That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”
4 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?
5 Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
6 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”
7 And the man jumped up and went home! And he rose and went home. Then the man got up and went home.
8 Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.
9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
11 But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?” And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
14 One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him, “Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?” Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
16 “Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before. No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.” Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
18 As Jesus was saying this, the leader of a synagogue came and knelt before him. “My daughter has just died,” he said, “but you can bring her back to life again if you just come and lay your hand on her.” While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.”
19 So Jesus and his disciples got up and went with him. And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding came up behind him. She touched the fringe of his robe, And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
21 for she thought, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned around, and when he saw her he said, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment. Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.
23 When Jesus arrived at the official’s home, he saw the noisy crowd and heard the funeral music. And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,
24 “Get out!” he told them. “The girl isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” But the crowd laughed at him. he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.
25 After the crowd was put outside, however, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up! But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
26 The report of this miracle swept through the entire countryside. And the report of this went through all that district. News of this spread through all that region.
27 After Jesus left the girl’s home, two blind men followed along behind him, shouting, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
28 They went right into the house where he was staying, and Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can make you see?” “Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied.
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, it will happen.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you|;
30 Then their eyes were opened, and they could see! Jesus sternly warned them, “Don’t tell anyone about this.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”

32 When they left, a demon-possessed man who couldn’t speak was brought to Jesus. As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.
33 So Jesus cast out the demon, and then the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed. “Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel!” they exclaimed. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
34 But the Pharisees said, “He can cast out demons because he is empowered by the prince of demons.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”
35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
