1 For the kingdom of the Messiah is like a family, the master whereof went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 having agreed with them for a penny a day, he sent them to his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said to them, And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
4 go ye likewise to my vineyard, and I will give you what is reasonable: accordingly they went thither. and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
5 about the sixth and ninth hour he went out again, and gave the like directions. So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6 at last, about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, why do you stand idling thus all day long? And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 they answer'd him, because we are not hired; go work then, said he, in my vineyard, and I will give you what's reasonable. They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ “’Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 so when even was come, the master of the vineyard said to his steward, call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first. And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 they then that were hired about the eleventh hour, came and received every man his penny. And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10 last of all they came who were hired first, expecting to have received more, but they had only a penny a man, Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11 who upon the receipt of it fell a murmuring against the master, and cry'd, And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 these last have work'd but an hour, and you put them upon the level with us, who have born the whole fatigue and heat of the day. saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 but he answered one of them, friend, I do thee no wrong: did not you agree for a penny a day? But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?
14 take your due, and be gone: I will give the last the same I give you. Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15 can't I do what I will with my own? because I am bountiful, are you invidious? Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 thus the last shall be first, and the first last: for though many are invited, few have precedence. So the last will be first, and the first last.” “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
17 As Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples in private, and said to them, And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
18 we are now going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death
19 and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again. and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
20 Then the mother of Zebedee's children, with her two sons, came and threw herself at his feet, desiring a favour of him. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 and he said to her, what would you have? grant, said she, when you are upon the throne, that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 but Jesus answered them, ye know not what ye ask, can ye bear to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? they said to him, we can. Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 he replied, ye shall indeed drink of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, I cannot grant to any but those whom my father has destin'd thereto. He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 upon hearing this, the other ten disciples were moved with indignation against the two brothers. And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 but Jesus calling them to him, said, ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise arbitrary dominion over them, and they that are great exercise their authority. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
26 but it must not be so among you: on the contrary, whoever would rise among you, let him be your minister. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27 and whoever would be chief among you, let him be your servant. and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—
28 as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all. even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
29 At their departure from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 and there were two blind men sitting by the way-side, who hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David." And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 and the people reprimanded them, to make them hold their tongue: but they bawl'd out the more, have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 then Jesus stood still, and calling them, said, what would ye have me do for you? And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 they said to him, grant Lord that we may have sight. They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 Jesus then having compassion on them, touched their eyes: and immediately they had their sight, and they followed him. And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him. Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
