1 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

4 He said to them, ‘You also go into my vineyard, and I’ll give you whatever is right.’ So off they went. and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
5 About noon and about three, he went out again and did the same thing. So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6 Then about five he went and found others standing around and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing? ’ And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 “ ‘Because no one hired us,’ they said to him. “ ‘You also go into my vineyard,’ he told them. They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ “’Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his foreman, ‘Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and ending with the first.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 “When those who were hired about five came, they each received one denarius. And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10 So when the first ones came, they assumed they would get more, but they also received a denarius each. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11 When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner: And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 ‘These last men put in one hour, and you made them equal to us who bore the burden of the day’s work and the burning heat.’ saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 “He replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I’m doing you no wrong. Didn’t you agree with me on a denarius? But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?
14 Take what’s yours and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you. Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous because I’m generous? ’ Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 “So the last will be first, and the first last.” So the last will be first, and the first last.” “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
17 While going up to Jerusalem, Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way, And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. 20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached him with her sons. She knelt down to ask him for something. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 “What do you want? ” he asked her. “Promise,” she said to him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and the other on your left, in your kingdom.” And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? ” “We are able,” they said to him. Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 He told them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten disciples heard this, they became indignant with the two brothers. And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. 31 The crowd demanded that they keep quiet, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David! ” The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 Jesus stopped, called them, and said, “What do you want me to do for you? ” And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 “Lord,” they said to him, “open our eyes.” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they could see, and they followed him. And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him. Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
