1 And when He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.
2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
3 And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.
4 And being unable to bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof over where He was; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the mat where the paralytic was lying. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
5 And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,
7 “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your mat and walk’? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?
10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man,
11 “I say to you, get up, pick up your mat, and go to your home.” “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
12 And he got up and immediately picked up the mat and went out before everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
13 And He went out again by the seashore; and the entire crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.
14 And as He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he stood up and followed Him. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 And it happened that as He was reclining at the table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples. For there were many of them, and they were following Him. And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.
16 And when the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they were saying to His disciples, “He is eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners!” And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “Those who are healthy do not have need for a physician, but only those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
18 And John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the attendants of the bridegroom fast when the bridegroom is with them? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.
20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.
21 “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise that patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.
22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.” And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.
24 And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?
26 how he entered the house of God around the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
27 And Jesus was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
28 Consequently the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
