1	A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum. And when the people heard that He was home,	And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.	And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.	A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.	When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home.
2	they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.	And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.	And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.	They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.	Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them,
3	Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.	And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.	And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.	Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.	four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.
4	Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.	And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.	And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.	Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.	They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.
5	When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”	And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”	When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.	When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”	Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”
6	But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,	Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,	But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,	Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,	But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
7	“Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”	“Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”	Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?	“Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”	“What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”
8	At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.	And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?	And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?	Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?	Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
9	“Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?	Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?	Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?	Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?	Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
10	But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,	But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—	But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)	But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man,	So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,
11	“I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”	“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”	I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.	“I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”	“Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
12	And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”	And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”	And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.	He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”	And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
13	Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.	He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.	And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.	Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.	Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.
14	As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.	And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.	And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.	As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.	As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
15	While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.	And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.	And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.	While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.	Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)
16	When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”	And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”	And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?	When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”	But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?”
17	On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”	And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”	When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.	On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”	When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
18	Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”	Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”	And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?	Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”	Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”
19	Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.	And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.	And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.	Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.	Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them.
20	But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.	The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.	But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.	But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.	But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
21	No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.	No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.	No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.	“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.	“Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.
22	And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”	And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”	And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.	And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”	“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”
23	One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain as they walked along.	One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain.	And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.	One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.	One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
24	So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”	And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”	And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?	The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”	But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
25	Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?	And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him:	And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?	He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?	Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
26	During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”	how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?”	How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?	In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”	He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
27	Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.	And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.	And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:	Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.	Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
28	Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”	So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”	Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.	So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”	So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”
