2	being forty days tempted by the devil, without eating any thing all that while: but that time expired, he at last was seiz'd with hunger.	for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.	where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3	then the devil said to him; if you are the son of God, command this stone to become bread.	The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”	The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4	but Jesus answered him, it is written, "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God appoints."	And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’”	Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
5	then the devil took him to the top of a high mountain, and in an instant represented to him all the kingdoms of the world.	And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,	The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6	all this power, said he, will I give thee, and the glory of them: for they are at my disposal, and where I please, I bestow them.	and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.	And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
7	if therefore you will worship me, they shall be all your own.	If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”	If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8	but Jesus answered him, avant, satan, for it is written, "thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."	And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”	Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
9	next, the devil brought him to Jerusalem, and setting him on the battlements of the temple, said to him, if you be the son of God, throw your self down from this height,	And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,	The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
10	for it is written, "he shall charge his angels to watch for your preservation:	for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’	For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
11	and they shall bear you up in their hands, for fear your foot should hit against a stone."	and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”	they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12	but Jesus replied, it is said, "thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."	And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”	Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
13	and when the whole temptation was ended, the devil left him for a time.	And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.	When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
14	Jesus return'd by the influence of the spirit into Galilee, where his same quickly spread over all the country;	And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.	Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
15	for he preach'd in their synagogues with universal applause.	And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.	He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16	being come to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; according to his custom, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and standing up to read,	And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. 17	they delivered to him the book of the prophet Esaias, and upon opening the book, that passage occurr'd, where it is written,	And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. 18	"the spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,	“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,	“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
19	to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord."	to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”	to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20	then he closed the book, and returning it to the minister, he sat down: and as the eyes of the whole synagogue were fix'd with attention upon him,	And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. 21	he undertook to show them, how the passage they had heard, was actually then accomplished.	And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”	He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
22	They all applauded him, and were surprized, that what he said, was delivered with so much grace, but they objected, is not this the son of Joseph?	And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”	All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
23	upon which he said, no doubt you will urge me with this proverb, "physician heal thy self, what we have heard you perform'd in Capernaum, do likewise here in your own country."	And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”	Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”
24	but in truth, added he, no prophet was ever well received in his own country.	And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.	“Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
25	I assure you, though there were many widows in Israel, when the heaven had furnished no rain for three years and a half, and a great famine spread through all the land:	But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land,	I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.
26	yet to none of them was Elias sent, except to one widow in Sarepta, a city of Sidon.	and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.	Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
27	and there were many lepers in the time of Elisha the prophet: yet none of them obtain'd a cure, except Naaman the Syrian.	And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”	And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”
28	upon hearing this, the whole synagogue were incensed against him.	When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.	All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.
29	and breaking up the assembly, they drove him out of the city, to the precipice of the hill, upon which it was built, in order to throw him headlong down.	And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.	They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.
30	but he pass'd thro' the midst of them and went away.	But passing through their midst, he went away.	But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
31	At length he went to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath-days.	And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath,	Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.
32	and they were astonished at his doctrine, for he spoke with authority.	and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.	They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
33	now there was in the synagogue a man possess'd with the spirit of an impure demon, who roar'd out, in these words, let us alone;	And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,	In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
34	what business have you with us, Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know who you are; the saint of God.	“Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”	“Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35	but Jesus rebuk'd him, saying, be dumb, and come out of him, upon which the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out, without doing him any harm.	But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.	“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36	and they were all amazed, and said to one another, what's the meaning of this? with authority and power he commands the impure spirits, and they come out!	And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”	All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”
37	and his fame spread through all the neighbouring country.	And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.	And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
38	When Jesus came out of the synagogue, he went to Simon's house, whose mother-in-law was seized with a violent fever, and they desired him to relieve her.	And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf.	Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
39	so approaching near her, he order'd the fever to leave her, and it left her, upon which she immediately arose, and waited upon them at table.	And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.	So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40	As soon as the sun was set, all sorts of diseased persons were brought before him by their friends, and he healed them all, by laying his hands upon them.	Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.	At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
41	many were dispossess'd of the demons, who cried aloud, you are the Messiah, the son of God, but he rebuked them, and would not suffer them to declare, that they knew him to be the Messiah.	And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.	Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42	When it was day, he retired into a desart place, where the people searching for him, found him out, and as they earnestly press'd him not to leave them,	And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them,	At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
43	he said to them, I must likewise proclaim the kingdom of God in other cities; for to that end am I sent.	but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”	But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
44	accordingly he went preaching in the synagogues through all Galilee.	And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.	And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
