1 Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit as he left the Jordan River. The Spirit led him while he was in the desert, And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 where he was tempted by the devil for 40 days. During those days Jesus ate nothing, so when they were over, he was hungry. for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. 4 Jesus answered him, |Scripture says, 'A person cannot live on bread alone.' | And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
5 The devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6 The devil said to him, |I will give you all the power and glory of these kingdoms. All of it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please. and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
7 So if you will worship me, all this will be yours.| If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered him, |Scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'| And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
9 Then the devil took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest part of the temple. He said to Jesus, |If you are the Son of God, jump from here! And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
10 Scripture says, 'He will put his angels in charge of you to watch over you carefully. for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
11 They will carry you in their hands so that you never hit your foot against a rock.'| and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 Jesus answered him, |It has been said, 'Never tempt the Lord your God.' | And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
13 After the devil had finished tempting Jesus in every possible way, the devil left him until another time. And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
14 Jesus returned to Galilee. The power of the Spirit was with him, and the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 16 Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual he went into the synagogue on the day of worship. He stood up to read the lesson. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
19 to announce the year of the Lord's favor.| to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Everyone in the synagogue watched him closely. And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. 23 So he said to them, |You'll probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' and then say to me, 'Do all the things in your hometown that we've heard you've done in Capernaum.'| And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”
24 Then Jesus added, |I can guarantee this truth: A prophet isn't accepted in his hometown. And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
25 |I can guarantee this truth: There were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time. It had not rained for three-and-a-half years, and the famine was severe everywhere in the country. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.
26 But God didn't send Elijah to anyone except a widow at Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
27 There were also many people with skin diseases in Israel in the prophet Elisha's time. But God cured no one except Naaman from Syria.| And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”
28 Everyone in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.
29 Their city was built on a hill with a cliff. So they got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the cliff. They intended to throw him off of it. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.
30 But Jesus walked right by them and went away. But passing through their midst, he went away. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
31 Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and taught them on a day of worship. And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.

33 In the synagogue was a man possessed by a spirit, an evil demon. He shouted very loudly, And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
34 |Oh, no! What do you want with us, Jesus from Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!| “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35 Jesus ordered the spirit, |Keep quiet, and come out of him!| The demon threw the man down in the middle of the synagogue and came out without hurting him. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 Everyone was stunned. They said to one another, |What kind of command is this? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits, and they come out.| And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”
37 So news about him spread to every place throughout the surrounding region. And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever. They asked Jesus to help her. And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
39 He bent over her, ordered the fever to leave, and it went away. She got up immediately and prepared a meal for them. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 When the sun was setting, everyone who had friends suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and cured them. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
41 Demons came out of many people, shouting, |You are the Son of God!| But Jesus ordered them not to speak. After all, they knew he was the Messiah. And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 In the morning he went to a place where he could be alone. The crowds searched for him. When they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
43 But he said to them, |I have to tell the Good News about the kingdom of God in other cities also. That's what I was sent to do.| but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
44 So he spread his message in the synagogues of Judea. And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
