1 AND Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the desert, And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 For the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4 And Jesus answered him: It is written, that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God. And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
5 And the devil led him into a high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time; And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6 And he said to him: To thee will I give all this power, and the glory of them; for to me they are delivered, and to whom I will, I give them. and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
7 If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 And Jesus answering said to him: It is written: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and he said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence. And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
10 For it is written, that He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee. for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
11 And that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone. and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
13 And all the temptation being ended, the devil departed from him for a time. And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit, into Galilee, and the fame of him went out through the whole country. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, and was magnified by all. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the book of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written: And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
19 To preach deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of reward. to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 22 And all gave testimony to him: and they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth, and they said: Is not this the son of Joseph? And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
23 And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country. And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”
24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country. And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.
26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman. and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”
28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger. When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.
29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.
30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way. But passing through their midst, he went away. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
31 And he went down into Capharnaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the sabbath days. And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.
32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech was with power. and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean devil, and he cried out with a loud voice, And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
34 Saying: Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God. “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Hold thy peace, and go out of him. And when the devil had thrown him into the midst, he went out of him, and hurt him not at all. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 And there came fear upon all, and they talked among themselves, saying: What word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out? And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”
37 And the fame of him was published into every place of the country. And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
38 And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her. And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
39 And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them to him. But he laying his hands on every one of them, healed them. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
41 And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ. And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place, and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him: and they stayed him that he should not depart from them. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
43 To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent. but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
