1 Later on, there was another festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.
2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It has five colonnades, Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
3 and under these a large number of sick people were lying—blind, lame, or paralyzed—waiting for the movement of the water. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
4 At certain times an angel of the Lord would go down into the pool and stir up the water, and whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.
5 One particular man was there who had been ill for 38 years. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he asked him, |Do you want to get well?| When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 The sick man answered him, |Sir, I don't have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I'm trying to get there, someone else steps down ahead of me.| The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Jesus told him, |Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!| Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
9 The man immediately became well, and he picked up his mat and started walking. Now that day was a Sabbath. And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
10 So the Jewish leaders told the man who had been healed, |It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
11 But he answered them, |The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.'| But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ “
12 They asked him, |Who is the man who told you, 'Pick it up and walk'?| They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away from the crowd in that place. Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later on, Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, |Look! You have become well. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.| Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
15 The man went off and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 So the Jewish leaders began persecuting Jesus, because he kept doing such things on the Sabbath. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.
17 But Jesus answered them, |My Father has been working until now, and I, too, am working.| But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
18 So the Jewish leaders were trying all the harder to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Jesus told them, |Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the Son can do nothing on his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing, What the Father does, the Son does likewise. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him even greater actions than these, so that you may be amazed. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
21 Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he chooses. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
22 The Father judges no one, but has given all authority to judge to the Son, For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
23 so that everyone may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
24 |Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whoever hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged, but has passed from death to life. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
25 Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the time approaches, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
26 Just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted the Son to have life in himself, For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
27 and he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28 Don't be amazed at this, because the time is approaching when everyone in their graves will hear the Son of Man's voice Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
29 and will come out—those who have done what is good to the resurrection that leads to life, and those who have practiced what is evil to the resurrection that ends in condemnation. and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.
30 I can do nothing on my own accord. I judge according to what I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.| “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
31 |If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not trustworthy. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.
32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth. You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.
34 I myself do not accept human testimony, but I am saying these things so that you may be saved. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.
35 That man John was a lamp that burns and brightly shines, and for a while you were willing to rejoice in his light. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 |But I have a greater testimony than John's, because the actions that the Father has given me to complete—the very actions that I am doing—testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me.
37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen what he looks like, And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
38 nor do you have his word at work in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he sent. and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
39 You examine the Scriptures carefully because you suppose that in them you have eternal life. Yet they testify about me. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,
40 But you are not willing to come to me to have life. yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
41 |I do not accept human praise. I do not receive glory from people. “I do not accept glory from human beings,
42 I know that you do not have the love of God in you. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me. Yet if another man comes in his own name, you will accept him. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
44 How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and do not look for the praise that comes from the only God? How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
45 Do not suppose that I will be the one to accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope, Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
46 because if you believed Moses, you would believe me, since he wrote about me. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
47 But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words?| But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
