1 When he had said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley. There was an orchard there, and he and his disciples went into it. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2 (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, knew the place too, because Jesus had met there many times with his disciples.) 3 So Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees. They came to the orchard with lanterns and torches and weapons. 5 They replied, |Jesus the Nazarene.| He told them, |I am he.| (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.) They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. 6 So when Jesus said to them, |I am he,| they retreated and fell to the ground. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then Jesus asked them again, |Who are you looking for?| And they said, |Jesus the Nazarene.| So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus replied, |I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these men go.| Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9 He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken, |I have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me.| This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his right ear. (Now the slave's name was Malchus.) Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 But Jesus said to Peter, |Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?| So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12 Then the squad of soldiers with their commanding officer and the officers of the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus and tied him up. So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
13 They brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 16 But Simon Peter was left standing outside by the door. So the other disciple who was acquainted with the high priest came out and spoke to the slave girl who watched the door, and brought Peter inside. but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. but Peter had to wait outside at the door. 17 The girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, |You're not one of this man's disciples too, are you?| He replied, |I am not.| The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18 (Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire they had made, warming themselves because it was cold. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.) Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 22 When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest's officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said, |Is that the way you answer the high priest?| When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 Jesus replied, |If I have said something wrong, confirm what is wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why strike me?| Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24 Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing in the courtyard warming himself. They said to him, |You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?| Peter denied it: |I am not!| Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26 One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, |Did I not see you in the orchard with him?| One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27 Then Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed. Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor's residence. (Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor's residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, |What accusation do you bring against this man?| So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 They replied, |If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.| They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate told them, |Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him according to your own law!| The Jewish leaders replied, |We cannot legally put anyone to death.| Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32 (This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.) This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33 So Pilate went back into the governor's residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him, |Are you the king of the Jews?| So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus replied, |Are you saying this on your own initiative, or have others told you about me?| Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, |I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?| Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus replied, |My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.| Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 Then Pilate said, |So you are a king!| Jesus replied, |You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world--to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.| Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 Pilate asked, |What is truth?| When he had said this he went back outside to the Jewish leaders and announced, |I find no basis for an accusation against him. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But it is your custom that I release one prisoner for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?| But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 Then they shouted back, |Not this man, but Barabbas!| (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.) They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
