1 Job continued his discourse: And Job again took up his discourse, and said: Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, Job again took up his discourse and said, And Job continued his discourse:
2 “As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice— the Almighty, who has embittered my soul— “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, <i>As</i> God liveth, <i>who</i> hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, <i>who</i> hath vexed my soul; “As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, “As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter,
3 as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils, as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, All the while my breath <i>is</i> in me, and the spirit of God <i>is</i> in my nostrils; For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,
4 my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will not utter deceit. my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies.
5 I will never say that you are right; I will maintain my integrity until I die. Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. “Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Until I die, I will not give up my integrity. I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity.
6 I will cling to my righteousness and never let go. As long as I live, my conscience will not accuse me. I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach <i>me</i> so long as I live. “I have kept hold of my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not rebuke any of my days. I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.
7 May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. “Let my enemy be as the wicked, and let him who rises up against me be as the unrighteous. Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous. “May my enemy be as the wicked, And my opponent as the criminal. “May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unjust!
8 For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life? For what <i>is</i> the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? “For what is the hope of the godless when he makes an end <i>of life,</i> When God requires his life? For what hope have the godless when they are cut off, when God takes away their life?
9 Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him? Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him? Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? “Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? Does God listen to their cry when distress comes upon them?
10 Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? “Or will he take pleasure in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? Will they find delight in the Almighty? Will they call on God at all times?
11 I will instruct you in the power of God. I will not conceal the ways of the Almighty. I will teach you concerning the hand of God; what is with the Almighty I will not conceal. I will teach you by the hand of God: <i>that</i> which <i>is</i> with the Almighty will I not conceal. “I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. “I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.
12 Surely all of you have seen it for yourselves. Why then do you keep up this empty talk? Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain? Behold, all ye yourselves have seen <i>it</i>; why then are ye thus altogether vain? “Behold, all of you have seen <i>it;</i> Why then do you talk of nothing? You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk?
13 This is the wicked man’s portion from God— the heritage the ruthless receive from the Almighty. “This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage that oppressors receive from the Almighty: This <i>is</i> the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, <i>which</i> they shall receive of the Almighty. “This is the portion of a wicked person from God, And the inheritance <i>which</i> tyrants receive from the Almighty: “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:
14 Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; and his offspring will never have enough food. If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword, and his descendants have not enough bread. If his children be multiplied, <i>it is</i> for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. However many his children, their fate is the sword; his offspring will never have enough to eat.
15 His survivors will be buried by the plague, and their widows will not weep for them. Those who survive him the pestilence buries, and his widows do not weep. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. “His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not <i>be able to</i> weep. The plague will bury those who survive him, and their widows will not weep for them.
16 Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a wardrobe like clay, Though he heap up silver like dust, and pile up clothing like clay, Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; “Though he piles up silver like dust, And prepares garments as <i>plentiful as</i> the clay, Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay,
17 what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent. he may pile it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide the silver. He may prepare <i>it</i>, but the just shall put <i>it</i> on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. He may prepare <i>it,</i> but the righteous will wear <i>it</i> And the innocent will divide the silver. what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver.
18 The house he built is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut set up by a watchman. He builds his house like a moth’s, like a booth that a watchman makes. He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth <i>that</i> the keeper maketh. “He has built his house like the spider’s web, Or a hut <i>which</i> the watchman has made. The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman.
19 He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone. He goes to bed rich, but will do so no more; he opens his eyes, and his wealth is gone. The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he <i>is</i> not. “He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it no <i>longer</i> exists. He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
20 Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest sweeps him away in the night. Terrors overtake him like a flood; in the night a whirlwind carries him off. Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. “Terrors overtake him like a flood; A storm steals him away in the night. 21 The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. The east wind lifts him up and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. 23 It claps its hands at him and hisses him out of his place.
