The word that came to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying: | The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: | This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
“Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and to those dwelling in Jerusalem, | “Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. | “Listen to the terms of this covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. |
and say to them, thus says YHWH God of Israel: Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant | You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant | Tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— |
that I commanded your⁺ fathers in the day I brought them from the land of Egypt, from the furnace iron, saying, ‘Listen to My voice, and do according to all that I command you⁺, and you⁺ shall be My people, and I shall be your⁺ God, | that I commanded your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Listen to my voice, and do all that I command you. So shall you be my people, and I will be your God, | the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the iron-smelting furnace.’ I said, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. |
so that I may establish the oath that I swore to your⁺ fathers, to give to them a land flowing with milk and honey, as this day.” And I answered and said, “Amen, YHWH. | that I may confirm the oath that I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as at this day.” Then I answered, “So be it, LORD.” | Then I will fulfill the oath I swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’—the land you possess today.” I answered, “Amen, LORD.” |
And YHWH said to me: “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear the words of this covenant, and do them. | And the LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them. | The LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow them. |
For I surely testified against your⁺ fathers in the day I brought them from the land of Egypt, and until this day, rising early and warning, I warned, saying, ‘Listen to My voice.’ | For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice. | From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, “Obey me.” |
And they did not hear, and they did not incline their ear; each man followed in the stubborness of their evil heart. And I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do and they have not done.” | Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.” | But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.’” |
And YHWH said to me: “A conspiracy has been found out among the men of Judah, and among those dwelling in Jerusalem! | Again the LORD said to me, “A conspiracy exists among the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. | Then the LORD said to me, “There is a conspiracy among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. |
They have turned back to the iniquities of their first fathers, who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them! The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant that I made with their fathers. | They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their fathers. | They have returned to the sins of their ancestors, who refused to listen to my words. They have followed other gods to serve them. Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant I made with their ancestors. |
Therefore, thus says YHWH: ‘Behold, I am bringing on them calamity that they will not be able to escape from it; and they will call out to Me, and I will not listen to them. | Therefore, thus says the LORD, Behold, I am bringing disaster upon them that they cannot escape. Though they cry to me, I will not listen to them. | Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will bring on them a disaster they cannot escape. Although they cry out to me, I will not listen to them. |
And the cities of Judah and those dwelling in Jerusalem will go, and they will cry out to the gods to which they offer incense to them; they will not save them at all in the time of their calamity. | Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they make offerings, but they cannot save them in the time of their trouble. | The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense, but they will not help them at all when disaster strikes. |
For to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah; and the number of the streets of Jerusalem you⁺ have appointed altars of shame—altars for burning incense to Baal! | For your gods have become as many as your cities, O Judah, and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to shame, altars to make offerings to Baal. | You, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’ |
And you—do not pray for this people or lift up for them a cry or prayer; for I will not hear them in the time of their crying out to Me on account of their calamity. | “Therefore do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble. | “Do not pray for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their distress. |
What is unto my beloved one in My house, her having done much evil scheming? And the holy flesh has passed over from you; when you are evil, then you rejoice? | What right has my beloved in my house, when she has done many vile deeds? Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult? | “What is my beloved doing in my temple as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes? Can consecrated meat avert your punishment? When you engage in your wickedness, then you rejoice.” |
A green olive tree, lovely and of good fruit, YHWH has called your name l with the noise of a great tumult He has kindled fire on it, and its branches are broken. | The LORD once called you ‘a green olive tree, beautiful with good fruit.’ But with the roar of a great tempest he will set fire to it, and its branches will be consumed. | The LORD called you a thriving olive tree with fruit beautiful in form. But with the roar of a mighty storm he will set it on fire, and its branches will be broken. |
And YHWH of Hosts who planted you has spoken evil against you on account of the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done themselves, provoking Me to anger by burning incense to Baal. | The LORD of hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster against you, because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.” | The LORD Almighty, who planted you, has decreed disaster for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused my anger by burning incense to Baal. |
And YHWH has cause me to know, and I know it; then You showed me their deeds. | The LORD made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. | Because the LORD revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. |
And I was docile like a lamb brought to the slaughter, and I did not know that they had devised schemes against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name will not be remembered anymore. | But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” | I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, “Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” |
And YHWH of Hosts is the One judging in righteousness, examining the kidneys and heart, let me see Your vengeance on them, for I have uncovered my dispute to You. | But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. | But you, LORD Almighty, who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause. |
Therefore thus says YHWH concerning the men of Anathoth, those seeking your soul, saying, “Do not prophesy in the name of YHWH, and you will not die by our hand!— | Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say, “Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will die by our hand”— | Therefore this is what the LORD says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying, “Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD or you will die by our hands|— |
Therefore thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Behold, I will punish them! The young men will die by the sword; their sons and their daughters will die by famine; | therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: “Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine, | therefore this is what the LORD Almighty says: “I will punish them. Their young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. |
and there will be no remnant for them! For I will bring disaster to the men of Anathoth, the year of their punishment. | and none of them shall be left. For I will bring disaster upon the men of Anathoth, the year of their punishment.” | Not even a remnant will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.” |
