Hear the word that YHWH speaks to you⁺, O house of Israel. Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.
Thus says YHWH: “Upon the way of the nations do not train; and do not be dismayed from the signs of the heavens, for the nations are dismayed by them. Thus says the LORD: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them.
For the customs of the peoples are vanity! For one cuts down a tree from the forest, the work of the hands of a craftsman, with the ax. for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
They decorate it with silver and with gold, they fasten it with nails and with hammers so that it will not totter. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.
They are like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, and they do not speak; They must be carried, because they can not step. You should not be afraid of them, for they can do no harm, and also to do good is not in them.” Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”
There is none like You, O YHWH! You are great, and great is Your name in might. There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might. No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.
Who does not fear You O King of the nations? Indeed, it is fitting for you! Because among all the wise ones of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, is none like You. Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
But they are altogether senseless and foolish, the teaching of of vanities, it is of wood! They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood! They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
Beaten Silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of a craftsman and of the hands of a refiner; blue and purple are their clothing, the work of skillful ones—all of them. Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers.
And YHWH is the true God; He is the living God, and King forever! At His wrath the earth trembles, and the nations cannot endure His indignation. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.
Thus you⁺ shall say to them: “The gods that the heavens and the earth have not made shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’”
He has made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens. It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
When He gives forth His voice, a tumult of waters is in the heavens, and He makes the vapors to rise from the end of the earth; He makes the lightning for the rain, and He brings forth the wind from His storehouses. When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
All mankind has become stupid in knowledge! Every refiner is put to shame by an idol; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is not breath in them. Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.
They are vanity, a work of errors; in the time of their punishment they shall perish. They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.
The portion of Jacob is not like these; for the Maker of all is He, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance—YHWH of Hosts is His name! Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the LORD of hosts is his name. He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the LORD Almighty is his name.
Gather up your bundle from the land, O inhabitant of the fortress! Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege! Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege.
For thus says YHWH: “Behold, I am slinging out those dwelling in the land at this time, and I will cause distress for them, so that they are found out!” For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it.” For this is what the LORD says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.”
Woe to me because of my brokenness—my wound is grievous! And I said, “Truly this is a sickness, and I must bear it. Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, “Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it.” Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”
My tent is plundered, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone forth from me, and they are no more; there is no one stretching out my tent anymore and raising up my curtains. My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains. My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter.
For the shepherds have become stupid, and they have not sought YHWH! Upon thus they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered. For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered. The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.
The sound of a report! Behold, it is coming—and a great commotion from the land of the north—to appoint the cities of Judah a desolation, a habitation for jackals! A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!— a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals. Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.
I know, O YHWH, that the way of man is not in himself; not of man is the going and establishing his steps. I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
Discipline me, O YHWH, but with justice—not in Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing. Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing. Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.
Pour out Your fury on the nations who do not know You, and on the families who do not call on Your name; for they have eaten up Jacob, and have devoured him and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate! Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not, and on the peoples that call not on your name, for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
