1 In that day, this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city. God appoints salvation for walls and bulwarks. In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city; he sets up salvation as walls and bulwarks. In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and ramparts.
2 Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter: the one which keeps faith. Open the gates, that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith.
3 You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
4 Trust in Yahweh forever; for in Yah, Yahweh, is an everlasting Rock. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.
5 For he has brought down those who dwell on high, the lofty city. He lays it low. He lays it low even to the ground. He brings it even to the dust. For he has humbled the inhabitants of the height, the lofty city. He lays it low, lays it low to the ground, casts it to the dust. He humbles those who dwell on high, he lays the lofty city low; he levels it to the ground and casts it down to the dust.

8 Yes, in the way of your judgments, Yahweh, we have waited for you. Your name and your renown are the desire of our soul. In the path of your judgments, O LORD, we wait for you; your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul. Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.
9 With my soul I have desired you in the night. Yes, with my spirit within me I will seek you earnestly; for when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
10 Let favor be shown to the wicked, yet he will not learn righteousness. In the land of uprightness he will deal wrongfully, and will not see Yahweh’s majesty. If favor is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly and does not see the majesty of the LORD. But when grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and do not regard the majesty of the LORD.
11 Yahweh, your hand is lifted up, yet they don’t see; but they will see your zeal for the people and be disappointed. Yes, fire will consume your adversaries. O LORD, your hand is lifted up, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people, and be ashamed. Let the fire for your adversaries consume them. LORD, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.
12 Yahweh, you will ordain peace for us, for you have also done all our work for us. O LORD, you will ordain peace for us, for you have indeed done for us all our works. LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us.
13 Yahweh our God, other lords besides you have had dominion over us, but we will only acknowledge your name. O LORD our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone we bring to remembrance. LORD our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone do we honor.
14 The dead shall not live. The departed spirits shall not rise. Therefore you have visited and destroyed them, and caused all memory of them to perish. They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end you have visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them. They are now dead, they live no more; their spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them.
15 You have increased the nation, O Yahweh. You have increased the nation! You are glorified! You have enlarged all the borders of the land. But you have increased the nation, O LORD, you have increased the nation; you are glorified; you have enlarged all the borders of the land. You have enlarged the nation, LORD; you have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders of the land.
16 Yahweh, in trouble they have visited you. They poured out a prayer when your chastening was on them. O LORD, in distress they sought you; they poured out a whispered prayer when your discipline was upon them. LORD, they came to you in their distress; when you disciplined them, they could barely whisper a prayer.
17 Just as a woman with child, who draws near the time of her delivery, is in pain and cries out in her pangs, so we have been before you, Yahweh. Like a pregnant woman who writhes and cries out in her pangs when she is near to giving birth, so were we because of you, O LORD; As a pregnant woman about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, LORD.
18 We have been with child. We have been in pain. We gave birth, it seems, only to wind. We have not worked any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen. we were pregnant, we writhed, but we have given birth to wind. We have accomplished no deliverance in the earth, and the inhabitants of the world have not fallen. We were with child, we writhed in labor, but we gave birth to wind. We have not brought salvation to the earth, and the people of the world have not come to life.
19 Your dead shall live. Their dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth will cast out the departed spirits. Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead. But your dead will live, LORD; their bodies will rise— let those who dwell in the dust wake up and shout for joy— your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.
20 Come, my people, enter into your rooms, and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourself for a little moment, until the indignation is past. Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the fury has passed by. 21 For, behold, Yahweh comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth also will disclose her blood, and will no longer cover her slain.
