1 Now Paul traveled to Derbe and also to Lystra. A disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer [in Christ], however, his father was a Greek. Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to go with him [as a missionary]; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
16 It happened that as we were on our way to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination [that is, a demonic spirit claiming to foretell the future and discover hidden knowledge], and she brought her owners a good profit by fortune-telling. As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed after Paul and us and kept screaming and shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God! 18 She continued doing this for several days. Then Paul, being greatly annoyed and worn out, turned and said to the spirit [inside her], “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ [as His representative] to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment. And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
19 But when her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities in the market place [where trials were held], But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. 20 and when they had brought them before the chief magistrates, they said, “These men, who are Jews, are throwing our city into confusion and causing trouble. 29 Then the jailer called for torches and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 31 And they answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus [as your personal Savior and entrust yourself to Him] and you will be saved, you and your household [if they also believe].” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
32 And they spoke the word of the Lord [concerning eternal salvation through faith in Christ] to him and to all who were in his house. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.
33 And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their bloody wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.
34 Then he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, since he had believed in God with his entire family [accepting with joy what had been made known to them about the Christ]. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.
35 Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their officers, saying, “Release those men.” But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.”
36 And the jailer repeated the words to Paul, saying, “The chief magistrates have sent word to release you; so come out now and go in peace.” And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”
37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us in public without a trial, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now they are sending us out secretly? No! Let them come here themselves and bring us out!” But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”
38 The officers reported this message to the chief magistrates, and when they heard that the prisoners were Romans, they were frightened; The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.
39 so they came [to the prison] and appealed to them [with apologies], and when they brought them out, they kept begging them to leave the city. So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.
40 So they left the prison and went to Lydia’s house; and when they had seen the brothers and sisters, they encouraged and comforted them, and left. So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed. After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.
