Hosea 11
NLT Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew International Version
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.1"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols.2But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them.
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him.4I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria.5"Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent?
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans.6A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans.
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.7My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.8"How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused.
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy.9I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man-- the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities.
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west.10They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah11They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes," declares the LORD.
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One.12Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One.
