“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols.2But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images.
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them.
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him.4I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them.
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria.5Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they refused to repent?
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans.6A sword will flash through their cities; it will destroy the bars of their gates and consume them in their own plans.
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.7My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means exalt them.
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.8How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred!
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy.9I will not execute the full fury of My anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man—the Holy One among you—and I will not come in wrath.
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west.10They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west.
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD.
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One.12Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.
