| 1 During the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, I, Daniel, saw another vision, following the one that had already appeared to me. | 1In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. |
| 2In this vision I was at the fortress of Susa, in the province of Elam, standing beside the Ulai River. | 2And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. |
| 3As I looked up, I saw a ram with two long horns standing beside the river. One of the horns was longer than the other, even though it had grown later than the other one. | 3Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. |
| 4The ram butted everything out of his way to the west, to the north, and to the south, and no one could stand against him or help his victims. He did as he pleased and became very great. | 4I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great. |
| 5While I was watching, suddenly a male goat appeared from the west, crossing the land so swiftly that he didn’t even touch the ground. This goat, which had one very large horn between its eyes, | 5And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. |
| 6headed toward the two-horned ram that I had seen standing beside the river, rushing at him in a rage. | 6And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power. |
| 7The goat charged furiously at the ram and struck him, breaking off both his horns. Now the ram was helpless, and the goat knocked him down and trampled him. No one could rescue the ram from the goat’s power. | 7And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. |
| 8The goat became very powerful. But at the height of his power, his large horn was broken off. In the large horn’s place grew four prominent horns pointing in the four directions of the earth. | 8Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. |
| 9Then from one of the prominent horns came a small horn whose power grew very great. It extended toward the south and the east and toward the glorious land of Israel. | 9And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. |
| 10Its power reached to the heavens, where it attacked the heavenly army, throwing some of the heavenly beings and some of the stars to the ground and trampling them. | 10And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. |
| 11It even challenged the Commander of heaven’s army by canceling the daily sacrifices offered to him and by destroying his Temple. | 11Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. |
| 12The army of heaven was restrained from responding to this rebellion. So the daily sacrifice was halted, and truth was overthrown. The horn succeeded in everything it did. | 12And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered. |
| 13Then I heard two holy ones talking to each other. One of them asked, “How long will the events of this vision last? How long will the rebellion that causes desecration stop the daily sacrifices? How long will the Temple and heaven’s army be trampled on?” | 13Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? |
| 14The other replied, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the Temple will be made right again.” Gabriel Explains the Vision | 14And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. |
| 15As I, Daniel, was trying to understand the meaning of this vision, someone who looked like a man stood in front of me. | 15And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. |
| 16And I heard a human voice calling out from the Ulai River, “Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of his vision.” | 16And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision. |
| 17As Gabriel approached the place where I was standing, I became so terrified that I fell with my face to the ground. “Son of man,” he said, “you must understand that the events you have seen in your vision relate to the time of the end.” | 17So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. |
| 18While he was speaking, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground. But Gabriel roused me with a touch and helped me to my feet. | 18Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright. |
| 19Then he said, “I am here to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath. What you have seen pertains to the very end of time. | 19And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be. |
| 20The two-horned ram represents the kings of Media and Persia. | 20The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. |
| 21The shaggy male goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes represents the first king of the Greek Empire. | 21And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. |
| 22The four prominent horns that replaced the one large horn show that the Greek Empire will break into four kingdoms, but none as great as the first. | 22Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. |
| 23“At the end of their rule, when their sin is at its height, a fierce king, a master of intrigue, will rise to power. | 23And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. |
| 24He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause a shocking amount of destruction and succeed in everything he does. He will destroy powerful leaders and devastate the holy people. | 24And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. |
| 25He will be a master of deception and will become arrogant; he will destroy many without warning. He will even take on the Prince of princes in battle, but he will be broken, though not by human power. | 25And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. |
| 26“This vision about the 2,300 evenings and mornings is true. But none of these things will happen for a long time, so keep this vision a secret.” | 26And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. |
| 27Then I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for several days. Afterward I got up and performed my duties for the king, but I was greatly troubled by the vision and could not understand it. | 27And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it. |
