Acts 4
NLT Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.1And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.2greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning.3And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.4But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.5On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,
Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.6with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.
They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”7And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,
are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?9if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,
Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well.
For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’11This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.14But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves.15But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,
“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.16saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”17But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”
So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.18So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?19But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,
We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”20for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God21And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.
for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years. The Believers Pray for Courage22For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.
As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.23When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—24And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,
you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?25who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Messiah.’26The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.27for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.28to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.29And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”30while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. The Believers Share Their Possessions31And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.32Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.
The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.33And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them34There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold
and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.35and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.36Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,
He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.37sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
