| 1Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him, and kissed him. | 1Then Joseph embraced his father, cried over him, and kissed him. |
| 2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. | 2After this, he issued orders to his physician servants to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel. |
| 3Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. | 3It took 40 days to complete the process, the normal period required for embalming. Meanwhile, the Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days. |
| 4Now when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying, | 4At the conclusion of the mourning period, Joseph addressed Pharaoh's household. "If you're satisfied with me, would you please take this message to Pharaoh for me? Tell him, |
| 5‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.’ ” | 5My father told me, "Look! I'm about to die. Bury me in my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So please let me travel to bury my father. I'll be right back.'" |
| 6And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.” | 6"Please go," Pharaoh replied. "Bury your father, as he asked you to do." |
| 7So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, | 7So Joseph got up and went to bury his father, accompanied by all of Pharaoh's servants, all of the elders of Egypt, |
| 8as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen. | 8all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. They left behind in the territory of Goshen only their youngest children, their flocks, and their herds. |
| 9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering. | 9Chariots and horsemen also accompanied Joseph, so there were a lot of people. |
| 10Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. He observed seven days of mourning for his father. | 10When they arrived at Atad's threshing floor, which is located beyond the Jordan River, they held a great and mournful memorial service, during which Joseph spent seven days mourning for his father. |
| 11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a deep mourning of the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. | 11As soon as the Canaanites who lived in the land observed the mourning going on at Atad's threshing floor, they commented "This is a significant time of mourning for the Egyptians." That's why the place, which is located beyond the Jordan River, became known as Abel-mizraim. |
| 12So his sons did for him just as he had commanded them. | 12And so Israel's sons did what he had instructed them to do: |
| 13For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as property for a burial place. | 13they carried him to the territory of Canaan and buried him in the cave in Machpelah field near Mamre that Abraham had purchased as a cemetery from Ephron the Hittite. |
| 14And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father. | 14After he had buried his father, Joseph and his brothers returned to Egypt, along with everyone who had gone with him to attend the burial. |
| 15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.” | 15Later, after Joseph's brothers faced the reality of their father's death, they asked themselves, "What happens if Joseph decides to hold a grudge against us? What if he pays us back in full for all the wrong things we did to him?" |
| 16So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: |
| 17‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. | 17"Before he died, your father left some instructions. He told us, 'Tell Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' offenses. I beg you, forgive their sins, because they wronged you."' So please forgive the transgression of the servants of your father's God." Joseph wept when they talked to him. |
| 18Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.” | 18So Joseph's brothers went to visit him, fell prostrate in front of him, and declared, "Look! We're your servants." |
| 19Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? | 19"Don't be afraid," Joseph responded. "Am I sitting in God's place? |
| 20But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. | 20As far as you're concerned, you were planning evil against me, but God intended it for good, planning to bring about the present result so that many people would be preserved alive. |
| 21Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. | 21So don't be afraid! I'll take care of you and your little ones." So Joseph kept on comforting them, speaking to the needs of their hearts. |
| 22So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father’s household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. | 22Joseph continued to live in Egypt, along with his father's household, until he was 110 years old. |
| 23Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were also brought up on Joseph’s knees. | 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's children, as well as the children who had been born to Manasseh's son Machir, whom he adopted as his own. |
| 24And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” | 24Later, Joseph told his brothers, "I'm going to die soon, but God will certainly provide for you and bring you up from this land to the land that he promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." |
| 25Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” | 25So Joseph made all of Israel's other children make this promise: "Because God is certainly going to take care of you, you are to carry my bones up from here." |
| 26So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. | 26Some time later, Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
