Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: | 1Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. |
Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. | 2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. |
"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. | 3Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. |
Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. | 4At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. |
He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. | 5He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. |
He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. | 6Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. |
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. | 7Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. |
The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. | 8The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. |
When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. | 9When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. |
Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." | 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. |
So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. | 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. |
Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. | 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. |
Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. | 13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. |
This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. | 14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. |
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." | 15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? ” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. |
Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." | 16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. |
The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. | 17A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. |
Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." | 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” |
Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" | 19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” |
Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") | 20Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” |
When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" | 21Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” |
Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." | 22Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” |
Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" | 23So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” |
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. | 24This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. |
Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. | 25Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. |
