For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm. I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. | 1For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of Asaph. I will cry out to God and call for help! I will cry out to God and he will pay attention to me. |
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. | 2In my time of trouble I sought the Lord. I kept my hand raised in prayer throughout the night. I refused to be comforted. |
I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. | 3I said, "I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me." (Selah) |
You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. | 4You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak. |
I thought about the former days, the years of long ago; | 5I thought about the days of old, about ancient times. |
I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked: | 6I said, "During the night I will remember the song I once sang; I will think very carefully." I tried to make sense of what was happening. |
"Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? | 7I asked, "Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor? |
Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? | 8Has his loyal love disappeared forever? Has his promise failed forever? |
Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?" | 9Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has his anger stifled his compassion?" |
Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. | 10Then I said, "I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One might become inactive. |
I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. | 11I will remember the works of the LORD. Yes, I will remember the amazing things you did long ago! |
I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds." | 12I will think about all you have done; I will reflect upon your deeds!" |
Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? | 13O God, your deeds are extraordinary! What god can compare to our great God? |
You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. | 14You are the God who does amazing things; you have revealed your strength among the nations. |
With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. | 15You delivered your people by your strength--the children of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah) |
The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed. | 16The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and trembled. Yes, the depths of the sea shook with fear. |
The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. | 17The clouds poured down rain; the skies thundered. Yes, your arrows flashed about. |
Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked. | 18Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. |
Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen. | 19You walked through the sea; you passed through the surging waters, but left no footprints. |
You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. | 20You led your people like a flock of sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. |
