A maskil of Asaph. O God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture? | 1Why, God? Have you rejected us forever? Your anger is burning against the sheep of your pasture. |
Remember the nation you purchased long ago, the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed-- Mount Zion, where you dwelt. | 2Remember your community, whom you purchased long ago, the tribe whom you redeemed for your possession. Remember Mount Zion, where you live. |
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary. | 3Hurry! Look at the permanent ruins— every calamity the enemy brought upon the Holy Place. |
Your foes roared in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards as signs. | 4Those who are opposing you roar where we were meeting with you; they unfurl their war banners as signs. |
They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees. | 5As one blazes a trail through a forest with an ax, |
They smashed all the carved paneling with their axes and hatchets. | 6now they're tearing down all its carved work with hatchets and hammers. |
They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name. | 7They burned your sanctuary to the ground, desecrating your dwelling place. |
They said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!" They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land. | 8They say to themselves, "We'll crush them completely;" They burned down all the meeting places of God in the land. |
We are given no signs from God; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be. | 9We see no signs for us; there is no longer a prophet, and no one among us knows the future. |
How long will the enemy mock you, God? Will the foe revile your name forever? | 10God, how long will the adversary scorn while the enemy despises your name endlessly? |
Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them! | 11Why do you not withdraw your hand— your right hand—from your bosom and destroy them? |
But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth. | 12But God is my king from ancient times, who brings acts of deliverance throughout the earth. |
It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. | 13You split the sea by your own power. You shattered the heads of sea monsters in the water. |
It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert. | 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan. You set it as food for desert creatures. |
It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever-flowing rivers. | 15You opened both the spring and the river; you dried up flowing rivers. |
The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. | 16Yours is the day, and yours is the night; you established the moon and the sun. |
It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. | 17You set all the boundaries of the earth; you made summer and winter. |
Remember how the enemy has mocked you, LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name. | 18Remember this: The enemy scorns the LORD and a foolish people despises your name. |
Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever. | 19Don't hand over the life of your dove to beasts; do not continuously forget your afflicted ones. |
Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. | 20Pay attention to your covenant, for the dark regions of the earth are full of violence. |
Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name. | 21Don't let the oppressed return in humiliation. The poor and needy will praise your name. |
Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long. | 22Get up, God, and prosecute your case— remember that you're being scorned by fools all day long. |
Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually. | 23Don't ignore the shout of those opposing you, The uproar of those who rebel against you continuously. |
