From Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have been granted a faith just as precious as ours.1This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.
May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! 2May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. Growing in Faith
I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence.3By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.
Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire.4And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge;5In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge,
to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness;6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness,
to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love.7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.
For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately.8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But concerning the one who lacks such things--he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins.9But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin.10So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away.
For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you. 11Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Paying Attention to Scripture
Therefore, I intend to remind you constantly of these things even though you know them and are well established in the truth that you now have.12Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.
Indeed, as long as I am in this tabernacle, I consider it right to stir you up by way of a reminder,13And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.
since I know that my tabernacle will soon be removed, because our Lord Jesus Christ revealed this to me.14For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,
Indeed, I will also make every effort that, after my departure, you have a testimony of these things. 15so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.
For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur.16For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes
For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: "This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted."17when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves heard it, for we were with him on the holy mountain.18We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. You do well if you pay attention to this as you would to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.19Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.
Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet's own imagination,20Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding,
for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. 21or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.
