Now Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she bore to Jacob, went to meet the young women of the land.1Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area, saw her, he grabbed her, forced himself on her, and sexually assaulted her.2When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.
Then he became very attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He fell in love with the young woman and spoke romantically to her.3His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Acquire this young girl as my wife."4And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."
When Jacob heard that Shechem had violated his daughter Dinah, his sons were with the livestock in the field. So Jacob remained silent until they came in. 5When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
Then Shechem's father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah.6Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.
Now Jacob's sons had come in from the field when they heard the news. They were offended and very angry because Shechem had disgraced Israel by sexually assaulting Jacob's daughter, a crime that should not be committed. 7Meanwhile, Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.
But Hamor made this appeal to them: "My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.8But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
Intermarry with us. Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves.9Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
You may live among us, and the land will be open to you. Live in it, travel freely in it, and acquire property in it." 10You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."
Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you require of me I'll give.11Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.
You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive, and I'll give whatever you ask of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!" 12Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife."
Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem had violated their sister Dinah.13Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.
They said to them, "We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace to us.14They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.
We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become like us by circumcising all your males.15We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.
Then we will give you our daughters to marry, and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.16Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.
But if you do not agree to our terms by being circumcised, then we will take our sister and depart." 17But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."
Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.18Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
The young man did not delay in doing what they asked because he wanted Jacob's daughter Dinah badly. (Now he was more important than anyone in his father's household.)19The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.
So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city,20So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city.
"These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.21"These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.
Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.22But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.
If we do so, won't their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? So let's consent to their demand, so they will live among us." 23Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us."
All the men who assembled at the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male who assembled at the city gate was circumcised.24All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and went to the unsuspecting city and slaughtered every male.25Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.26They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.
Jacob's sons killed them and looted the city because their sister had been violated.27The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields.28They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.
They captured as plunder all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses. 29They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought ruin on me by making me a foul odor among the inhabitants of the land--among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number; they will join forces against me and attack me, and both I and my family will be destroyed!"30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."
But Simeon and Levi replied, "Should he treat our sister like a common prostitute?" 31But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
