Now Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she bore to Jacob, went to meet the young women of the land.1Some time later, Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area, saw her, he grabbed her, forced himself on her, and sexually assaulted her.2When Hamor the Hivite's son Shechem, the regional leader, saw her, he grabbed her and raped her, humiliating her.
Then he became very attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He fell in love with the young woman and spoke romantically to her.3He was attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter, since he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Acquire this young girl as my wife."4Then Shechem told his father Hamor, "Get this young woman for me to be my wife."
When Jacob heard that Shechem had violated his daughter Dinah, his sons were with the livestock in the field. So Jacob remained silent until they came in. 5Because Jacob learned that Shechem had dishonored his daughter Dinah while his sons were still out with their cattle on the open range, he remained silent until they returned.
Then Shechem's father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah.6Meanwhile, Shechem's father Hamor arrived to talk to Jacob.
Now Jacob's sons had come in from the field when they heard the news. They were offended and very angry because Shechem had disgraced Israel by sexually assaulting Jacob's daughter, a crime that should not be committed. 7Just then Jacob's sons arrived from the field. When they heard what had happened, they were distraught with grief and livid with anger toward Shechem, because he had committed a disgraceful deed in Israel by forcing Jacob's daughter to have sex, an act that never should have happened.
But Hamor made this appeal to them: "My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.8But Hamor said this: "My son is deeply attracted to your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
Intermarry with us. Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves.9Intermarry with us. Give your daughters to us and take our sons for yourselves.
You may live among us, and the land will be open to you. Live in it, travel freely in it, and acquire property in it." 10Live with us anywhere you want. Live, trade, and grow rich in it."
Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you require of me I'll give.11Shechem also addressed Dinah's father and brothers. He told them, "If you'll just approve me, I'll give whatever you ask of me.
You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive, and I'll give whatever you ask of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!" 12No matter how big or how extensive your demands are for a dowry and wedding presents from me, I'll provide whatever you ask. Only give me the young lady to be my wife."
Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem had violated their sister Dinah.13But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceptively, because Shechem had dishonored their sister Dinah.
They said to them, "We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace to us.14They told them, "We can't do this. We can't give our sister to a man who isn't circumcised, because that would be insulting to us.
We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become like us by circumcising all your males.15But we'll agree to your request, only if you will become like us by circumcising every male among you.
Then we will give you our daughters to marry, and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.16Then we'll give our daughters to you and take your daughters for ourselves, live among you, and be as a united people.
But if you do not agree to our terms by being circumcised, then we will take our sister and depart." 17But if you won't listen to us, then we're going to take our daughter and leave."
Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.18What they said pleased Hamor and his son Shechem,
The young man did not delay in doing what they asked because he wanted Jacob's daughter Dinah badly. (Now he was more important than anyone in his father's household.)19so the young man did not delay the matter any further, since he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now Shechem was the most important person in his father's household.
So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city,20So Hamor and his son Shechem entered the gate of their city and addressed the men of their city.
"These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.21"These men are at peace with us," they announced. "Therefore, let them live in the land and trade in it. Look! The land is large enough for them. Let's take their daughters as wives for ourselves and let's give our sons to them.
Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.22"However," they added, "only on this condition will the men consent to live with us and be united as a single people with us: every male among us will have to be circumcised just as they are.
If we do so, won't their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? So let's consent to their demand, so they will live among us." 23Shouldn't all their cattle, acquisitions, and animals belong to us? So, let's give our consent to them, and then they'll live with us."
All the men who assembled at the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male who assembled at the city gate was circumcised.24All of the males who heard Hamor and his son Shechem, who had gone out to the city gate, were circumcised.
In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and went to the unsuspecting city and slaughtered every male.25Three days later, while they were still in pain, Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah's brothers, each grabbed a sword and entered the city unannounced, intending to kill all the males.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took back Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.
Jacob's sons killed them and looted the city because their sister had been violated.27Jacob's other sons came along afterward and plundered the city where their sister had been defiled,
They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields.28seizing all of their flocks, herds, donkeys, and whatever else was in the city or had been left out in the field.
They captured as plunder all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses. 29They carried off all their wealth, their children, and their wives as captives, plundering everything that remained in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought ruin on me by making me a foul odor among the inhabitants of the land--among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number; they will join forces against me and attack me, and both I and my family will be destroyed!"30Then Jacob told Simeon and Levi, "You have certainly stirred up trouble for me! You've made me despised by the Canaanites and the Perizzites who live in this territory. Because I have only a few men with me, they're going to gather themselves together and attack me until I am totally destroyed, along with my entire household!"
But Simeon and Levi replied, "Should he treat our sister like a common prostitute?" 31"Should he have treated our sister like a whore?" they asked in response.
