Now Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she bore to Jacob, went to meet the young women of the land.1Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.
When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area, saw her, he grabbed her, forced himself on her, and sexually assaulted her.2When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force.
Then he became very attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He fell in love with the young woman and spoke romantically to her.3He was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.
Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Acquire this young girl as my wife."4So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this young girl for a wife."
When Jacob heard that Shechem had violated his daughter Dinah, his sons were with the livestock in the field. So Jacob remained silent until they came in. 5Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came in.
Then Shechem's father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah.6Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
Now Jacob's sons had come in from the field when they heard the news. They were offended and very angry because Shechem had disgraced Israel by sexually assaulting Jacob's daughter, a crime that should not be committed. 7Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.
But Hamor made this appeal to them: "My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.8But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him in marriage.
Intermarry with us. Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves.9"Intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves.
You may live among us, and the land will be open to you. Live in it, travel freely in it, and acquire property in it." 10"Thus you shall live with us, and the land shall be open before you; live and trade in it and acquire property in it."
Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you require of me I'll give.11Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, "If I find favor in your sight, then I will give whatever you say to me.
You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive, and I'll give whatever you ask of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!" 12"Ask me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give according as you say to me; but give me the girl in marriage."
Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem had violated their sister Dinah.13But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
They said to them, "We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace to us.14They said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.
We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become like us by circumcising all your males.15"Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you be circumcised,
Then we will give you our daughters to marry, and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.16then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.
But if you do not agree to our terms by being circumcised, then we will take our sister and depart." 17"But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go."
Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.18Now their words seemed reasonable to Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
The young man did not delay in doing what they asked because he wanted Jacob's daughter Dinah badly. (Now he was more important than anyone in his father's household.)19The young man did not delay to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father.
So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city,20So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
"These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.21"These men are friendly with us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage, and give our daughters to them.
Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.22"Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised.
If we do so, won't their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? So let's consent to their demand, so they will live among us." 23"Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live with us."
All the men who assembled at the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male who assembled at the city gate was circumcised.24All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and went to the unsuspecting city and slaughtered every male.25Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city unawares, and killed every male.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went forth.
Jacob's sons killed them and looted the city because their sister had been violated.27Jacob's sons came upon the slain and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister.
They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields.28They took their flocks and their herds and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field;
They captured as plunder all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses. 29and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even all that was in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought ruin on me by making me a foul odor among the inhabitants of the land--among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number; they will join forces against me and attack me, and both I and my family will be destroyed!"30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and my men being few in number, they will gather together against me and attack me and I will be destroyed, I and my household."
But Simeon and Levi replied, "Should he treat our sister like a common prostitute?" 31But they said, "Should he treat our sister as a harlot?"
