NET Bible | English Standard Version |
You are children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald for the sake of the dead. | 1“You are the sons of the LORD your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead. |
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth. | 2For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. |
You must not eat any forbidden thing. | 3“You shall not eat any abomination. |
These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, | 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, |
the ibex, the gazelle, the deer, the wild goat, the antelope, the wild oryx, and the mountain sheep. | 5the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. |
You may eat any animal that has hooves divided into two parts and that chews the cud. | 6Every animal that parts the hoof and has the hoof cloven in two and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. |
However, you may not eat the following animals among those that chew the cud or those that have divided hooves: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger. (Although they chew the cud, they do not have divided hooves and are therefore ritually impure to you). | 7Yet of those that chew the cud or have the hoof cloven you shall not eat these: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger, because they chew the cud but do not part the hoof, are unclean for you. |
Also the pig is ritually impure to you; though it has divided hooves, it does not chew the cud. You may not eat their meat or even touch their remains. | 8And the pig, because it parts the hoof but does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. |
These you may eat from among water creatures: anything with fins and scales you may eat, | 9“Of all that are in the waters you may eat these: whatever has fins and scales you may eat. |
but whatever does not have fins and scales you may not eat; it is ritually impure to you. | 10And whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you. |
All ritually clean birds you may eat. | 11“You may eat all clean birds. |
These are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, | 12But these are the ones that you shall not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, |
the kite, the black kite, the dayyah after its species, | 13the kite, the falcon of any kind; |
every raven after its species, | 14every raven of any kind; |
the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, the falcon after its species, | 15the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind; |
the little owl, the long-eared owl, the white owl, | 16the little owl and the short-eared owl, the barn owl |
the jackdaw, the carrion vulture, the cormorant, | 17and the tawny owl, the carrion vulture and the cormorant, |
the stork, the heron after its species, the hoopoe, the bat, | 18the stork, the heron of any kind; the hoopoe and the bat. |
and any winged thing on the ground are impure to you--they may not be eaten. | 19And all winged insects are unclean for you; they shall not be eaten. |
You may eat any clean bird. | 20All clean winged things you may eat. |
You may not eat any corpse, though you may give it to the resident foreigner who is living in your villages and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. You are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother's milk. | 21“You shall not eat anything that has died naturally. You may give it to the sojourner who is within your towns, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. “You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. |
You must be certain to tithe all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year. | 22“You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. |
In the presence of the LORD your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. | 23And before the LORD your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. |
When he blesses you, if the place where he chooses to locate his name is distant, | 24And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the LORD your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the LORD your God chooses, to set his name there, |
you may convert the tithe into money, secure the money, and travel to the place the LORD your God chooses for himself. | 25then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the LORD your God chooses |
Then you may spend the money however you wish for cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and enjoy it. | 26and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household. |
As for the Levites in your villages, you must not ignore them, for they have no allotment or inheritance along with you. | 27And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you. |
At the end of every three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce, in that very year, and you must store it up in your villages. | 28“At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. |
Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work you do. | 29And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do. |
