It happened that when He went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching Him closely.1Now one Sabbath when Jesus went to dine at the house of a leader of the Pharisees, they were watching him closely.
And there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.2There right in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy.
And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"3So Jesus asked the experts in religious law and the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.4But they remained silent. So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.
And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"5Then he said to them, "Which of you, if you have a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?"
And they could make no reply to this.6But they could not reply to this.
And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,7Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them,
"When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,8"When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host.
and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this man,' and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place.9So the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this man your place.' Then, ashamed, you will begin to move to the least important place.
"But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you.10But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host approaches he will say to you, 'Friend, move up here to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you.
"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.12He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you host a dinner or a banquet, don't invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.
"But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,13But when you host an elaborate meal, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."14Then you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"15When one of those at the meal with Jesus heard this, he said to him, "Blessed is everyone who will feast in the kingdom of God!"
But He said to him, "A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;16But Jesus said to him, "A man once gave a great banquet and invited many guests.
and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'17At the time for the banquet he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, because everything is now ready.'
"But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.'18But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please excuse me.'
"Another one said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.'19Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going out to examine them. Please excuse me.'
"Another one said, 'I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'20Another said, 'I just got married, and I cannot come.'
"And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'21So the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the household was furious and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly to the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'
"And the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'22Then the slave said, 'Sir, what you instructed has been done, and there is still room.'
"And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.23So the master said to his slave, 'Go out to the highways and country roads and urge people to come in, so that my house will be filled.
'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.'"24For I tell you, not one of those individuals who were invited will taste my banquet!'"
Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them,25Now large crowds were accompanying Jesus, and turning to them he said,
"If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.26"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.27Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
"For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?28For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't sit down first and compute the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
"Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish the tower, all who see it will begin to make fun of him.
saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'30They will say, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish!'
"Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?31Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
"Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.32If he cannot succeed, he will send a representative while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.
"So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.33In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.
"Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?34"Salt is good, but if salt loses its flavor, how can its flavor be restored?
"It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."35It is of no value for the soil or for the manure pile; it is to be thrown out. The one who has ears to hear had better listen!"
