Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, The tyrannical city!1Woe to the city that is rebellious and defiled, the oppressive city!
She heeded no voice, She accepted no instruction. She did not trust in the LORD, She did not draw near to her God.2She has not obeyed; she has not accepted discipline. She has not trusted in the LORD; she has not drawn near to her God.
Her princes within her are roaring lions, Her judges are wolves at evening; They leave nothing for the morning.3The princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are wolves of the night, which leave nothing for the morning.
Her prophets are reckless, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.4Her prophets are reckless--treacherous men. Her priests profane the sanctuary; they do violence to instruction.
The LORD is righteous within her; He will do no injustice. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He does not fail. But the unjust knows no shame.5The righteous LORD is in her; he does no wrong. He applies his justice morning by morning; he does not fail at dawn, yet the one who does wrong knows no shame.
"I have cut off nations; Their corner towers are in ruins. I have made their streets desolate, With no one passing by; Their cities are laid waste, Without a man, without an inhabitant.6I have cut off nations; their corner towers are destroyed. I have laid waste their streets, with no one to pass through. Their cities lie devastated, without a person, without an inhabitant.
"I said, 'Surely you will revere Me, Accept instruction.' So her dwelling will not be cut off According to all that I have appointed concerning her. But they were eager to corrupt all their deeds.7I thought: You will certainly fear me and accept correction. Then her dwelling place would not be cut off based on all that I had allocated to her. However, they became more corrupt in all their actions.
"Therefore wait for Me," declares the LORD, "For the day when I rise up as a witness. Indeed, My decision is to gather nations, To assemble kingdoms, To pour out on them My indignation, All My burning anger; For all the earth will be devoured By the fire of My zeal.8Therefore, wait for me--this is the LORD's declaration--until the day I rise up for plunder. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, in order to pour out my indignation on them, all my burning anger; for the whole earth will be consumed by the fire of my jealousy.
"For then I will give to the peoples purified lips, That all of them may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him shoulder to shoulder.9For I will then restore pure speech to the peoples so that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him with a single purpose.
"From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers, My dispersed ones, Will bring My offerings.10From beyond the rivers of Cush my supplicants, my dispersed people, will bring an offering to me.
"In that day you will feel no shame Because of all your deeds By which you have rebelled against Me; For then I will remove from your midst Your proud, exulting ones, And you will never again be haughty On My holy mountain.11On that day you will not be put to shame because of everything you have done in rebelling against me. For then I will remove from among you your jubilant, arrogant people, and you will never again be haughty on my holy mountain.
"But I will leave among you A humble and lowly people, And they will take refuge in the name of the LORD.12I will leave a meek and humble people among you, and they will take refuge in the name of the LORD.
"The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble."13The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or tell lies; a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will pasture and lie down, with nothing to make them afraid.
Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!14Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; shout loudly, Israel! Be glad and celebrate with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!
The LORD has taken away His judgments against you, He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; You will fear disaster no more.15The LORD has removed your punishment; he has turned back your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is among you; you need no longer fear harm.
In that day it will be said to Jerusalem: "Do not be afraid, O Zion; Do not let your hands fall limp.16On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: "Do not fear; Zion, do not let your hands grow weak.
"The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.17The LORD your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing."
"I will gather those who grieve about the appointed feasts-- They came from you, O Zion; The reproach of exile is a burden on them.18I will gather those who have been driven from the appointed festivals; they will be a tribute from you and a reproach on her.
"Behold, I am going to deal at that time With all your oppressors, I will save the lame And gather the outcast, And I will turn their shame into praise and renown In all the earth.19Yes, at that time I will deal with all who oppress you. I will save the lame and gather the outcasts; I will make those who were disgraced throughout the earth receive praise and fame.
"At that time I will bring you in, Even at the time when I gather you together; Indeed, I will give you renown and praise Among all the peoples of the earth, When I restore your fortunes before your eyes," Says the LORD.20At that time I will bring you back, yes, at the time I will gather you. I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes. The LORD has spoken.
