"In the first year of Darius the Mede, I arose to be an encouragement and a protection for him. | 1In the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to strengthen and protect him.) |
"And now I will tell you the truth. Behold, three more kings are going to arise in Persia. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them; as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, he will arouse the whole empire against the realm of Greece. | 2Now I will tell you the truth. "Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece. |
"And a mighty king will arise, and he will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. | 3Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants. |
"But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out toward the four points of the compass, though not to his own descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded, for his sovereignty will be uprooted and given to others besides them. | 4But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them. |
"Then the king of the South will grow strong, along with one of his princes who will gain ascendancy over him and obtain dominion; his domain will be a great dominion indeed. | 5"The king of the South will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his. |
"After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the king of the North to carry out a peaceful arrangement. But she will not retain her position of power, nor will he remain with his power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who sired her as well as he who supported her in those times. | 6After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father, and the one who supported her during those times. |
"But one of the descendants of her line will arise in his place, and he will come against their army and enter the fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and display great strength. | 7In the place of the king of the South, one from her family will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph. |
"Also their gods with their metal images and their precious vessels of silver and gold he will take into captivity to Egypt, and he on his part will refrain from attacking the king of the North for some years. | 8He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold. For some years he will stay away from the king of the North, |
"Then the latter will enter the realm of the king of the South, but will return to his own land. | 9who will enter the kingdom of the king of the South and then return to his own land. |
"His sons will mobilize and assemble a multitude of great forces; and one of them will keep on coming and overflow and pass through, that he may again wage war up to his very fortress. | 10"His sons will mobilize for war and assemble a large number of armed forces. They will advance, sweeping through like a flood, and will again wage war as far as his fortress. |
"The king of the South will be enraged and go forth and fight with the king of the North. Then the latter will raise a great multitude, but that multitude will be given into the hand of the former. | 11Infuriated, the king of the South will march out to fight with the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but they will be handed over to his enemy. |
"When the multitude is carried away, his heart will be lifted up, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail. | 12When the army is carried off, he will become arrogant and cause tens of thousands to fall, but he will not triumph. |
"For the king of the North will again raise a greater multitude than the former, and after an interval of some years he will press on with a great army and much equipment. | 13The king of the North will again raise a multitude larger than the first. After some years he will advance with a great army and many supplies. |
"Now in those times many will rise up against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to fulfill the vision, but they will fall down. | 14"In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail. |
"Then the king of the North will come, cast up a siege ramp and capture a well-fortified city; and the forces of the South will not stand their ground, not even their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. | 15Then the king of the North will come, build up a siege ramp, and capture a well-fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their select troops will not be able to resist. |
"But he who comes against him will do as he pleases, and no one will be able to withstand him; he will also stay for a time in the Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand. | 16The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants, and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful land with total destruction in his hand. |
"He will set his face to come with the power of his whole kingdom, bringing with him a proposal of peace which he will put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to ruin it. But she will not take a stand for him or be on his side. | 17He will resolve to come with the force of his whole kingdom and will reach an agreement with him. He will give him a daughter in marriage to destroy it, but she will not stand with him or support him. |
"Then he will turn his face to the coastlands and capture many. But a commander will put a stop to his scorn against him; moreover, he will repay him for his scorn. | 18Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him. |
"So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and be found no more. | 19He will turn his attention back to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble, fall, and be no more. |
"Then in his place one will arise who will send an oppressor through the Jewel of his kingdom; yet within a few days he will be shattered, though not in anger nor in battle. | 20"In his place one will arise who will send out a tax collector for the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he will be broken, though not in anger or in battle. |
"In his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred, but he will come in a time of tranquility and seize the kingdom by intrigue. | 21"In his place a despised person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace and seize the kingdom by intrigue. |
"The overflowing forces will be flooded away before him and shattered, and also the prince of the covenant. | 22A flood of forces will be swept away before him; they will be broken, as well as the covenant prince. |
"After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. | 23After an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully. He will rise to power with a small nation. |
"In a time of tranquility he will enter the richest parts of the realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers never did, nor his ancestors; he will distribute plunder, booty and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time. | 24During a time of peace, he will come into the richest parts of the province and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time. |
"He will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South with a large army; so the king of the South will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him. | 25"With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him. |
"Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain. | 26Those who eat his provisions will destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain. |
"As for both kings, their hearts will be intent on evil, and they will speak lies to each other at the same table; but it will not succeed, for the end is still to come at the appointed time. | 27The two kings, whose hearts are bent on evil, will speak lies at the same table but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time. |
"Then he will return to his land with much plunder; but his heart will be set against the holy covenant, and he will take action and then return to his own land. | 28The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; he will take action, then return to his own land. |
"At the appointed time he will return and come into the South, but this last time it will not turn out the way it did before. | 29"At the appointed time he will come again to the South, but this time will not be like the first. |
"For ships of Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened and will return and become enraged at the holy covenant and take action; so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. | 30Ships of Kittim will come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant. |
"Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation. | 31His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the regular sacrifice and set up the abomination of desolation. |
"By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action. | 32With flattery he will corrupt those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action. |
"Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. | 33Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to many, yet they will fall by the sword and flame, and be captured and plundered for a time. |
"Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join with them in hypocrisy. | 34When they fall, they will be helped by some, but many others will join them insincerely. |
"Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time. | 35Some of those who have insight will fall so that they may be refined, purified, and cleansed until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time. |
"Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done. | 36"Then the king will do whatever he wants. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god, and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, because what has been decreed will be accomplished. |
"He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all. | 37He will not show regard for the gods of his fathers, the god desired by women, or for any other god, because he will magnify himself above all. |
"But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures. | 38Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses--a god his fathers did not know--with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. |
"He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price. | 39He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward. |
"At the end time the king of the South will collide with him, and the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, with horsemen and with many ships; and he will enter countries, overflow them and pass through. | 40"At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood. |
"He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, Moab and the foremost of the sons of Ammon. | 41He will also invade the beautiful land, and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of the Ammonites. |
"Then he will stretch out his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. | 42He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape. |
"But he will gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt; and Libyans and Ethiopians will follow at his heels. | 43He will get control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt. The Libyans and Cushites will also be in submission. |
"But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many. | 44But reports from the east and the north will terrify him, and he will go out with great fury to annihilate and completely destroy many. |
"He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him. | 45He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain, but he will meet his end with no one to help him. |
