These are the names of the Israelis who entered Egypt with Jacob, each one having come with his family: | 1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: |
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, | 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, |
Issacar, Zebulun, Benjamin, | 3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, |
Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. | 4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. |
All those who descended from Jacob totaled 75 persons. Now Joseph was already in Egypt. | 5All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. |
Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died. | 6Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. |
But the Israelis were fruitful and increased abundantly. They multiplied in numbers and became very, very strong. As a result, the land was filled with them. | 7But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. |
Eventually a new king who was unacquainted with Joseph came to power in Egypt. | 8Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. |
He told his people, "Look, the Israeli people are more numerous and more powerful than we are. | 9And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. |
Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." | 10Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” |
So the Egyptians placed supervisors over them, oppressing them with heavy burdens. The Israelis built the supply cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh. | 11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. |
But the more the Egyptians afflicted the Israelis, the more they multiplied and flourished, so that the Egyptians became terrified of the Israelis. | 12But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. |
The Egyptians ruthlessly forced the Israelis to serve them, | 13So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves |
making their lives bitter through hard labor with mortar, bricks, and all kinds of outdoor labor. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. | 14and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. |
Later, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah. | 15Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, |
"When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." | 16“When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” |
But the midwives feared God and didn't do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live. | 17But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. |
When the king of Egypt called for the midwives, he asked them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?" | 18So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” |
"Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women," the midwives replied to Pharaoh. "They're so healthy that they give birth before the midwives arrive to help them." | 19The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” |
God was pleased with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong. | 20So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. |
Because the midwives feared God, he provided families for them. | 21And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. |
Meanwhile, Pharaoh continued commanding all of his people, "You're to throw every Hebrew son who is born into the Nile River, but you're to allow every Hebrew daughter to live." | 22Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.” |
