Holman Christian Standard BibleNET Bible
I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I look at a young woman? 1"I made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I entertain thoughts against a virgin?
For what portion would I have from God above, or what inheritance from the Almighty on high? 2What then would be one's lot from God above, one's heritage from the Almighty on high?
Doesn't disaster come to the unjust and misfortune to evildoers? 3Is it not misfortune for the unjust, and disaster for those who work iniquity?
Does He not see my ways and number all my steps? 4Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?
If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has rushed to deceit, 5If I have walked in falsehood, and if my foot has hastened to deceit--
let God weigh me in accurate scales, and He will recognize my integrity. 6let him weigh me with honest scales; then God will discover my integrity.
If my step has turned from the way, my heart has followed my eyes, or impurity has stained my hands, 7If my footsteps have strayed from the way, if my heart has gone after my eyes, or if anything has defiled my hands,
let someone else eat what I have sown, and let my crops be uprooted. 8then let me sow and let another eat, and let my crops be uprooted.
If my heart has been seduced by my neighbor's wife or I have lurked at his door, 9If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door,
let my own wife grind grain for another man, and let other men sleep with her. 10then let my wife turn the millstone for another man, and may other men have sexual relations with her.
For that would be a disgrace; it would be a crime deserving punishment. 11For I would have committed a shameful act, an iniquity to be judged.
For it is a fire that consumes down to Abaddon; it would destroy my entire harvest. 12For it is a fire that devours even to Destruction, and it would uproot all my harvest.
If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants when they made a complaint against me, 13"If I have disregarded the right of my male servants or my female servants when they disputed with me,
what could I do when God stands up to judge? How should I answer Him when He calls me to account? 14then what will I do when God confronts me in judgment; when he intervenes, how will I respond to him?
Did not the One who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same God form us both in the womb? 15Did not the one who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us in the womb?
If I have refused the wishes of the poor or let the widow's eyes go blind, 16If I have refused to give the poor what they desired, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
if I have eaten my few crumbs alone without letting the fatherless eat any of it-- 17If I ate my morsel of bread myself, and did not share any of it with orphans--
for from my youth, I raised him as his father, and since the day I was born I guided the widow-- 18but from my youth I raised the orphan like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided the widow!
if I have seen anyone dying for lack of clothing or a needy person without a cloak, 19If I have seen anyone about to perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without a coat,
if he did not bless me while warming himself with the fleece from my sheep, 20whose heart did not bless me as he warmed himself with the fleece of my sheep,
if I ever cast my vote against a fatherless child when I saw that I had support in the city gate, 21if I have raised my hand to vote against the orphan, when I saw my support in the court,
then let my shoulder blade fall from my back, and my arm be pulled from its socket. 22then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let my arm be broken off at the socket.
For disaster from God terrifies me, and because of His majesty I could not do these things. 23For the calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I was powerless.
If I placed my confidence in gold or called fine gold my trust, 24"If I have put my confidence in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security!'
if I have rejoiced because my wealth is great or because my own hand has acquired so much, 25if I have rejoiced because of the extent of my wealth, or because of the great wealth my hand had gained,
if I have gazed at the sun when it was shining or at the moon moving in splendor, 26if I looked at the sun when it was shining, and the moon advancing as a precious thing,
so that my heart was secretly enticed and I threw them a kiss, 27so that my heart was secretly enticed, and my hand threw them a kiss from my mouth,
this would also be a crime deserving punishment, for I would have denied God above. 28then this also would be iniquity to be judged, for I would have been false to God above.
Have I rejoiced over my enemy's distress, or become excited when trouble came his way? 29If I have rejoiced over the misfortune of my enemy or exulted because calamity found him--
I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse. 30I have not even permitted my mouth to sin by asking for his life through a curse--
Haven't the members of my household said, "Who is there who has not had enough to eat at Job's table?" 31if the members of my household have never said, 'If only there were someone who has not been satisfied from Job's meat!'--
No stranger had to spend the night on the street, for I opened my door to the traveler. 32But no stranger had to spend the night outside, for I opened my doors to the traveler--
Have I covered my transgressions as others do by hiding my guilt in my heart, 33if I have covered my transgressions as men do, by hiding iniquity in my heart,
because I greatly feared the crowds, and the contempt of the clans terrified me, so I grew silent and would not go outside? 34because I was terrified of the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I remained silent and would not go outdoors--
If only I had someone to hear my case! Here is my signature; let the Almighty answer me. Let my Opponent compose His indictment. 35"If only I had someone to hear me! Here is my signature--let the Almighty answer me! If only I had an indictment that my accuser had written.
I would surely carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown. 36Surely I would wear it proudly on my shoulder, I would bind it on me like a crown;
I would give Him an account of all my steps; I would approach Him like a prince. 37I would give him an accounting of my steps; like a prince I would approach him.
If my land cries out against me and its furrows join in weeping, 38"If my land cried out against me and all its furrows wept together,
if I have consumed its produce without payment or shown contempt for its tenants, 39if I have eaten its produce without paying, or caused the death of its owners,
then let thorns grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are concluded. 40then let thorns sprout up in place of wheat, and in place of barley, weeds!" The words of Job are ended.
