I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I look at a young woman? 1“I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze with desire at a virgin?
For what portion would I have from God above, or what inheritance from the Almighty on high? 2For what is the allotment of God from above, or the heritage from the Almighty on high?
Doesn't disaster come to the unjust and misfortune to evildoers? 3Does not disaster come to the unjust and calamity to the workers of iniquity?
Does He not see my ways and number all my steps? 4Does He not see my ways and count my every step?
If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has rushed to deceit, 5If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has rushed to deceit,
let God weigh me in accurate scales, and He will recognize my integrity. 6let God weigh me with honest scales, that He may know my integrity.
If my step has turned from the way, my heart has followed my eyes, or impurity has stained my hands, 7If my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has followed my eyes, or if impurity has stuck to my hands,
let someone else eat what I have sown, and let my crops be uprooted. 8then may another eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.
If my heart has been seduced by my neighbor's wife or I have lurked at his door, 9If my heart has been enticed by my neighbor’s wife, or I have lurked at his door,
let my own wife grind grain for another man, and let other men sleep with her. 10then may my own wife grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.
For that would be a disgrace; it would be a crime deserving punishment. 11For that would be a heinous crime, an iniquity to be judged.
For it is a fire that consumes down to Abaddon; it would destroy my entire harvest. 12For it is a fire that burns down to Abaddon; it would root out my entire harvest.
If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants when they made a complaint against me, 13If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or maidservant when they made a complaint against me,
what could I do when God stands up to judge? How should I answer Him when He calls me to account? 14what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?
Did not the One who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same God form us both in the womb? 15Did not He who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same One form us in the womb?
If I have refused the wishes of the poor or let the widow's eyes go blind, 16If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail,
if I have eaten my few crumbs alone without letting the fatherless eat any of it-- 17if I have eaten my morsel alone, not sharing it with the fatherless—
for from my youth, I raised him as his father, and since the day I was born I guided the widow-- 18though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow—
if I have seen anyone dying for lack of clothing or a needy person without a cloak, 19if I have seen one perish for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a cloak,
if he did not bless me while warming himself with the fleece from my sheep, 20if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with the fleece of my sheep,
if I ever cast my vote against a fatherless child when I saw that I had support in the city gate, 21if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,
then let my shoulder blade fall from my back, and my arm be pulled from its socket. 22then may my arm fall from my shoulder and be torn from its socket.
For disaster from God terrifies me, and because of His majesty I could not do these things. 23For calamity from God terrifies me, and His splendor I cannot overpower.
If I placed my confidence in gold or called fine gold my trust, 24If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,
if I have rejoiced because my wealth is great or because my own hand has acquired so much, 25if I have rejoiced in my great wealth because my hand had gained so much,
if I have gazed at the sun when it was shining or at the moon moving in splendor, 26if I have beheld the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor,
so that my heart was secretly enticed and I threw them a kiss, 27so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
this would also be a crime deserving punishment, for I would have denied God above. 28this would also be an iniquity to be judged, for I would have denied God on high.
Have I rejoiced over my enemy's distress, or become excited when trouble came his way? 29If I have rejoiced in my enemy’s ruin, or exulted when evil befell him—
I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse. 30I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse—
Haven't the members of my household said, "Who is there who has not had enough to eat at Job's table?" 31if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’—
No stranger had to spend the night on the street, for I opened my door to the traveler. 32but no stranger had to lodge on the street, for my door has been open to the traveler—
Have I covered my transgressions as others do by hiding my guilt in my heart, 33if I have covered my transgressions like Adam by hiding my guilt in my heart,
because I greatly feared the crowds, and the contempt of the clans terrified me, so I grew silent and would not go outside? 34because I greatly feared the crowds and the contempt of the clans terrified me, so that I kept silent and would not go outside—
If only I had someone to hear my case! Here is my signature; let the Almighty answer me. Let my Opponent compose His indictment. 35(Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment.
I would surely carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown. 36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown.
I would give Him an account of all my steps; I would approach Him like a prince. 37I would give account of all my steps; I would approach Him like a prince.)—
If my land cries out against me and its furrows join in weeping, 38if my land cries out against me and its furrows weep together,
if I have consumed its produce without payment or shown contempt for its tenants, 39if I have devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,
then let thorns grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are concluded. 40then let briers grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley.” Thus conclude the words of Job.
