Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town.1And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.
Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, "Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven." 2And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”
At this, some of the scribes said among themselves, "He's blaspheming!" 3And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”
But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts? 4But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
For which is easier: to say, Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, Get up and walk?5For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--then He told the paralytic, "Get up, pick up your mat, and go home."6But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”
And he got up and went home. 7And he rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck and gave glory to God who had given such authority to men. 8When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, "Follow Me!" So he got up and followed Him. 9As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came as guests to eat with Jesus and His disciples.10And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 11And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
But when He heard this, He said, "Those who are well don't need a doctor, but the sick do.12But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners." 13Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Then John's disciples came to Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?" 14Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 15And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
No one patches an old garment with unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment and makes the tear worse. 16No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. But they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved." 17Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”
As He was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before Him, saying, "My daughter is near death, but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live."18While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
So Jesus and His disciples got up and followed him. 19And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
Just then, a woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years approached from behind and touched the tassel on His robe,20And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment,
for she said to herself, "If I can just touch His robe, I'll be made well!" 21for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”
But Jesus turned and saw her. "Have courage, daughter," He said. "Your faith has made you well." And the woman was made well from that moment. 22Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
When Jesus came to the leader's house, He saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly. 23And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
"Leave," He said, "because the girl isn't dead, but sleeping." And they started laughing at Him. 24he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.
But when the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.25But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
And this news spread throughout that whole area. 26And the report of this went through all that district.
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, shouting, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 27And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.”
When He entered the house, the blind men approached Him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this?"" Yes, Lord," they answered Him. 28When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”
Then He touched their eyes, saying, "Let it be done for you according to your faith!"29Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them sternly, "Be sure that no one finds out!" 30And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.”
But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout that whole area. 31But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
Just as they were going out, a demon-possessed man who was unable to speak was brought to Him.32As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.
When the demon had been driven out, the man spoke. And the crowds were amazed, saying, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!" 33And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said, "He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons!" 34But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”
Then Jesus went to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.35And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.
When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd.36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest." 38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
