English Standard Version | NET Bible |
Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. | 1Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants. |
And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. | 2Everyone will suffer--the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor. |
The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. | 3The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment. |
The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. | 4The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away. |
The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty. |
Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. | 6So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people. |
The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. | 7The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan. |
The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. | 8The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases. |
No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. | 9They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it. |
The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. | 10The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight. |
There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. | 11They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth. |
Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. | 12The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble. |
For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. | 13This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest. |
They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. | 14They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west. |
Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. | 15So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel. |
From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” | 16From the ends of the earth we hear songs--the Just One is majestic. But I say, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!" |
Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! | 17Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth! |
He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. | 18The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake. |
The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. | 19The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently. |
The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. | 20The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again. |
On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. | 21At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth. |
They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. | 22They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished. |
Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. | 23The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor. |
