O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? | 1Maschil of Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture? |
Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. | 2Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. |
Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary! | 3Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. |
Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs. | 4Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs. |
They were like those who swing axes in a forest of trees. | 5A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees. |
And all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers. | 6But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers. |
They set your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground. | 7They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground. |
They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land. | 8They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land. |
We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. | 9We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. |
How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever? | 10O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? |
Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them! | 11Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom. |
Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. | 12For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. |
You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. | 13Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. |
You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. | 14Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. |
You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. | 15Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers. |
Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. | 16The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun. |
You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter. | 17Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter. |
Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name. | 18Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name. |
Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of your poor forever. | 19O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever. |
Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. | 20Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty. |
Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name. | 21O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name. |
Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day! | 22Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. |
Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually! | 23Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually. |
