Psalm 74
ESV Parallel BSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionBerean Study Bible
O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?1A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, O God? Why does Your anger smolder against the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt.2Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance—Mount Zion where You dwell.
Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!3Turn Your steps to the everlasting ruins, to everything in the sanctuary the enemy has destroyed.
Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs.4Your foes have roared within Your meeting place; they have unfurled their banners as signs,
They were like those who swing axes in a forest of trees.5like men wielding axes in a thicket of trees
And all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers.6and smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks.
They set your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground.7They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; they have defiled the dwelling place of Your Name.
They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land.8They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land.
We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long.9There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.
How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever?10How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You? Will the foe revile Your name forever?
Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them!11Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand? Stretch it out to destroy them!
Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.12Yet God is my King from ancient times, working salvation on the earth.
You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.13You divided the sea by Your strength; You smashed the heads of the dragons of the sea;
You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him to the creatures of the desert.
You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams.15You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.16The day is Yours, and also the night; You established the moon and the sun.
You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter.17You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made the summer and winter.
Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name.18Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD, how a foolish people has spurned Your name.
Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of your poor forever.19Do not deliver the soul of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your afflicted forever.
Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.20Consider Your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name.21Do not let the oppressed retreat in shame; may the poor and needy praise Your name.
Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!22Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! Remember how the fool mocks You all day long.
Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!23Do not disregard the clamor of Your adversaries, the uproar of Your enemies that ascends continually.
