O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! | 1God of vengeance, LORD God of vengeance, display your splendor! |
Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! | 2Stand up, judge of the earth, and repay the proud. |
O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? | 3How long will the wicked, LORD, how long will the wicked continue to triumph? |
They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. | 4When they speak, they spew arrogance. Everyone who practices iniquity brags about it. |
They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. | 5LORD, they have crushed your people, afflicting your heritage. |
They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; | 6The wicked kill widows and foreigners; they murder orphans. |
and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” | 7They say, "The LORD cannot see, and the God of Jacob will not notice." |
Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? | 8Pay attention, you dull ones among the crowds! You fools! Will you ever become wise? |
He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? | 9The one who formed the ear can hear, can he not? The one who made the eyes can see, can he not? |
He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— | 10The one who disciplines nations can rebuke them, can he not? The one who teaches mankind can discern, can he not? |
the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. | 11The LORD knows the thoughts of human beings— that they are futile. |
Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, | 12How blessed is the man whom you instruct, LORD, whom you teach from your Law, |
to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13keeping him calm when times are troubled until a pit has been dug for the wicked. |
For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; | 14For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage. |
for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15Righteousness will be restored with justice, and all the pure of heart will follow it. |
Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? | 16Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity? |
If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. | 17If the LORD had not been my helper, I would have quickly become silent. |
When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. | 18When I say that my foot is shaking, your gracious love, LORD, will sustain me. |
When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. | 19When my anxious inner thoughts become overwhelming, your comfort encourages me. |
Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? | 20Will destructive national leaders, who plan wicked things through misuse of the Law, be allied with you? |
They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They gather together against the righteous, condemning the innocent to death. |
But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. | 22But the LORD is my stronghold, and my God, the rock, is my refuge. |
He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. | 23He will repay them for their sin; he will annihilate them because of their evil. The LORD our God will annihilate them. |
